The Thing

The Plot
Antarctica, Winter 1982. A group of 12 American researchers have an encounter with a seemingly mad researcher from a Norwegian Outpost. When the men investigate the Norwegian Outpost, they find strange remains of some “human.” The men slowly discover the Norwegians found a spaceship buried under the ice, and its inhabitant, a shape shifting alien life form that can imitate any living thing. And it’s not dead.

The Movie
Any self respecting horror movie fan should see this movie. I saw this movie after I heard so many great reviews. After watching it, I was amazed. I watched it several more times and rented it several more times before getting the DVD. The characters here are not one-dimensional cardboard cutouts, but characters that seem very real and fleshed out with good dialogue, great actors, and realistic reactions to the horrific events. The direction gives an overwhelming sense of dread and Apocalyptic feeling. The music is a simple beat, but it is suitably full of dread, desperation, and isolation. The special effects are reason alone to see this film. The electronic puppets and makeup effects are refreshing for anyone sick of awful CGI in new movies. The effects are creative due to Rob Bottin’s strange and bizarre imagination. The monster is different every time we see it and so we never are subjected to the same image over and over.

Overall, this is a great horror film that excels in every category. I love this movie with a passion. If they made movies like this today, the horror genre wouldn’t be filled with CGI filled Monster Flicks with no imagination produced by people that think we want to see the same thing over and over again.

The DVD
The DVD is a must for people who loved the movie. First we get an in depth documentary called The Thing: Terror Takes Shape, which features interviews with John Carpenter, Kurt Russell, Rob Bottin, Albert Whitlock, and Bill Lancaster. Next is a fun commentary by Carpenter and Russell. Then we get to see never before seen stop motion animation for the film’s climax. This is capped off with behind the scenes location footage, theatrical trailer, behind the scenes photographs, and storyboards and conceptual art. The DVD is certainly worth getting for the great movie and the equally superb special features. Rent it once, and if you like it, buying the DVD is really worth it.
