They Live
The Plot
John Nada (Roddy Piper) is a drifter looking for nothing but a decent job and place to stay in a city in America. This is a tough task in a country where the poor and the underclass are growing at an incredible rate. Who is to blame? The government? Greedy corporations? Unstable economy? A pair of sunglasses shall open John Nada's eyes and reveal the truth to him.
The Movie
Roddy Piper who is better known as one of the most hyper-active WWE wrestlers of all time plays it cool in They Live, which is a relief. He does not over-act nor under-act; he is simply perfect for the role. Piper's improvised line: "I came here to chew bubble gum and kick ass...and I am all outta bubble gum" remains as one of the best recognized quotes in film history.
They Live is also noted for a brutal yet hilarious fight between Piper and Keith David which lasts for at least 10 minutes until both combatants are bloody and bruised. Aside from the awesome fun factor They Live delivers it is also a serious satire. John Carpenter starts things off slow and ever so smoothly and delicately builds on the story until it explodes. My only complaint is with the cheesy 80's style gun action near the end.
The DVD
The sound is great on the DVD, but the picture quality could of used a bit more touching up. You can't blame the age of the film as I've seen films from the same time period with MUCH better picture quality like the Re-Animator and Near Dark DVDs. Simply put, it looks like a brand spanking new VHS copy, but the miracle of DVDs is that it will forever look like a brand spanking new VHS copy.
The special features include a commentary of the entire film by John Carpenter and Roddy Piper as well as an eight minute Making Of. The DVD also has some worthy easy to find Easter Eggs. Ultimately, it was the commentary which convinced this Canadian fella to order the DVD from the UK instead of simply going to the store and buying the shitty featureless Region 1 DVD. John Carpenter's commentaries are interesting, revealing, and informative. Roddy Piper doing the commentary with him is just kick ass!
