Review Quote
"This film, directed by Wes Craven, isn't all that good. The premise is alright (being somewhat based on the true story by Wade Davis), and could have possibly worked out OK. The idea of a different kind of zombie (a non-violent one) was intriguing; but in the end the story is just bland, bordering on the ridiculous, and so the film just doesn't work."

The Plot
A anthropologist travels to Haiti in search of a powder that is said to raise the dead. During his search he falls into a pit of voodoo, curses and death.
The Movie
This film, directed by Wes Craven, isn't all that good. The premise is alright (being somewhat based on the true story by Wade Davis), and could have possibly worked out OK. The idea of a different kind of zombie (a non-violent one) was intriguing; but in the end the story is just bland, bordering on the ridiculous, and so the film just doesn't work.
What does work well, is Craven's ability to create a fuzzy line between what is real and what isn't. He did so in "A Nightmare on Elm Street", and he did it later with his "New Nightmare"; here he also pretty convincing. Plus with the content at hand in this film, it's certainly possible that none of it was real. Though I must say after a while, you begin to realize which are the dream sequences as they are much more supernatural, etc.
The music also works well in this film, while nothing spectacular, the score is pretty fitting; sounding much like native Haitian music (or at least convincing enough for me). However what in the end doesn't work, and basically ruins the film is the story. Even being a new take on zombies didn't help. A lot of what we see is almost laughable, and completely stupid. Not to mention the ending is truly bad, easily one of the dumbest I have seen.
All in all, this one can be missed. Fans of Craven may want to see this, they may not. Worth a viewing if your looking for something a little new. You will not be missing out though, if you decide to not take a look at this one.
The DVD
The DVD is pretty poor. The transfers are OK, the audio is actually not too bad. The extras are almost non-existent. We get a theatrical trailer, and recommendations. Not even the extras are worth taking a look at this DVD.
