Review Quote
"The imagery and mood of this film really make it work the way it does. It's dark all the time, even in the day. There's just something about the way Hooper lights the film; something wrong could happen at any time. Every scene with the brother at the window is a masterpiece; it's eerie, it's gut-wrenching, and everyone can empathize with the situation. One of my favorite things about this film is the Max Schrek style of vampire they use."

The Plot
A Novelist returns to his small hometown to write a book. At the same time a mysterious antiques dealer, with a business partner no one has met also move into the town. People begin disappearing, and people begin to suspect the newcomers as the culprits. Just who is behind it all?

The Movie
With the remake being on TV earlier this year, everyone should take a look back at this (also) made for TV movie from the twisted head of writer Stephen King. As one of my favorite King novels ever I was giddy when I first found out that there was also a movie to go along with it. Being a huge fan of vampires and mythology that surrounds them, it was all too much of a treat to pass up. I'd also like to bring up that, for everyone who thinks Tobe Hooper is totally overrated (like me) and thinks he somehow got lucky with "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre" , needs to watch this film. Don't get me wrong I still think he's totally overrated, but he's not a complete hack.

The imagery and mood of this film really make it work the way it does. It's dark all the time, even in the day. There's just something about the way Hooper lights the film; something wrong could happen at any time. Every scene with the brother at the window is a masterpiece; it's eerie, it's gut-wrenching, and everyone can empathize with the situation. One of my favorite things about this film is the Max Schrek style of vampire they use. If you've seen Nosferatu (or movies with similar vampires, you know what I mean.) The makeup they use on the newly formed vampires is actually subtle and yet quite effective.

Being a made for TV movie, this movie was scripted very long. Running at just over three hours you'd think the film would bore you at times. Not true, you got to remember Stephen King writes some pretty long stuff. I don't think there was any time where I really got significantly bored, or where I wished they'd just move on. The story was deeper than most, because it had time to develop it's characters. "Salem's Lot" had several side stories, but they worked well to revolve back around into the central story. Also it's cool how little the vampires are really shown. Which only helps to build up the fear of them for when the movie nears it's end, and all vampire-hell breaks loose.

All in all, this is one of my favorite vampire films ever. My only real complaint is that it's obvious where the commercials were supposed to be, but big deal right? I think this is a movie most horror fans will enjoy, especially those who are fans of Stephan King and/or vampires. I also recommend this movie to all Tobe Hooper haters who have not seen it. You may change your mind, if not, at least you'll have more ammo to rag on him with.

The DVD
What do I expect from a made for TV movie? Not much? You're right. The transfers are real good, and should be noted. The extras stink. We get a Theatrical Trailer (for overseas I suppose). That's it; I didn't expect a lot, but I got less.
