Pumpkinhead
The Plot
Ed Harley grew up in fear of a local legend, Pumpkinhead. Now a grown man, Ed
has a young boy he loves dearly. But when his son is accidentally hit by a group
of rowdy teenagers on their motorcycles and they run, Ed goes to the Old Woman
that lives deep in the Woods. They say she has special powers. Ed comes to her
for Revenge, but when she conjures up Pumpkinhead, Ed realizes he must stop the
Creature before it’s too late.
The Movie
I saw this movie in my local Video Store long before I actually watched it and
thought it would be an okay monster flick. When I saw it, I realized it was much
more. Stan Winston’s Directorial debut is a sinister and nightmarish folklore
horror tale.
First of all, the film’s atmosphere and direction are masterful. Winston
obviously knows his stuff after experience on so many movies. The Acting is very
well rounded, too. Lance Henriksen makes a sympathetic and likeable main
character. Any good father would do what he did and you really feel his loss.
The Teen Cast are nothing really special and aren’t really much besides cannon
fodder, but they do okay. And this film actually has a good story, and isn’t
just a monster mash. It’s a story of a father’s loyalty and love for his son,
and how far he’d go to get him back. But none of this stops the horror.
And, of course, there isn’t a movie with Stan Winston’s name on it without a
kick ass monster. Pumpkinhead is a truly great monster and is one of Stan
Winston Studios’ best Creations. The Combination of animatronics, puppetry, and
men in latex costumes comes together to create a truly memorable horror
character.
All in All, Pumpkinhead is an outstanding horror film that any horror fan should
see.
The DVD
Man, I hope MGM does to this what they did to The Howling after years of fans
having to put up with the bare bones DVD with a mere Theatrical Trailer. This,
like the original The Howling DVD, has merely a Theatrical Trailer. The Picture
Quality is good. There are some nice menus, especially the Main menu that plays
the Creepy Music. I mean, a Theatrical Trailer is better than nothing, but not
much.
