Phantasm
The Plot
When Mike discovers that bodies are being stolen from the local mausoleum, he and his older brother Jody investigate. They find that the mortician has found a route between Earth and the afterworld, and he needs bodies.
The Movie
This movie screams “original” and “bizarre.” Director Don Coscarelli managed to make a minor classic with a low budget. The atmosphere of the film and its overall appearance, whether it be the mausoleum’s marble corridors or the stark dream landscapes, works very well.
Baldwin and Thornbury work well and are thankfully smarter than a lot of low budget horror characters. Reggie Bannister is mainly comic relief here and he does what he has to well and with a lot of charisma. Angus Scrimm is really creepy as one of the best modern horror characters. He is sadly overlooked now, but shouldn’t be.
The Special Effects, especially the balls, are great. Very good considering budget. Coscarelli’s Directing is on par always. There’s really nothing to dislike here, folks. This is a horror great.
The DVD
Phantasm? Special Edition? How will it be? Well, I’ll tell you what it is: pretty damn good. An audio commentary by Coscarelli and Bannister set things up. Ten minutes of deleted footage is next. An interview with Scrimm and Coscarelli from 1979 is a good treat. Some theatrical trailers and TV spots are included as well. Some Behind the Scenes footage which would be INCREDIBLY boring without background commentary by Bannister and Coscarelli is a nice treat for the fans. Still Galleries are also included with a cool “Behind the Scenes” Booklit. A real nice addition I dug was Fangoria Convention Footage of Angus Scrimm doing his Tall Man thing. A nice DVD which fans of the film should love.
