Night Of The Living Dead

The Plot
A small group of people are hiding out in an old farm house, hoping that the zombies outside can't get to them.

The Movie
This is original installment in George A. Romero's "Dead" trilogy. Even being released way back in the 60's, in all it's black & white glory, "Night of the Living Dead" will always live on as one the best films ever made.

Even back then Romero's screenplay, directing, and his ability to make gory special effects, were top notch. The story is excellent. The major set being inside the farmhouse gives a creepy claustrophobic feel to the film, something Romero would more or less continue using in the latter films. The effects were nothing like the later movie (though you can't really compete with Tom Savini), but are still very impressive for the time. The gore level was too, not as large as the later films, but for the time, pretty big.

This film didn't have to be filmed in black & white. However, Romero chose to go this route; and I think for this film it was an excellent way to go. The lack of color adds to the eeriness and intensity of the film.

Overall this is a great film. Everyone who has seen the Romero's other "Dead" pictures must see this film. Anyone who claims to love horror should also see this movie. It's a classic and a masterpiece and really should be viewed by anyone.

The DVD
The Elite Entertainment release is what I had been begging for. And now that it is out, and I have it, I am glad I begged. The visual and audio transfers are magnificent. Some of the best work I have seen; I'm truly impressed.

We get two audio commentaries in this release. One with director George A. Romero, co-writer John Russo, and actors Karl Hardman and Marilyn Eastman. This one, as usual when Romero is involved is quite informative; though it's pretty apparent that they've forgotten a bit over the years, as they actively discuss why they did certain things, sometimes coming up with no clear result. The other one has actors Bill Hinzman, Judith O'Dea, Keith Wayne, Kyra Schon, Russell Streiner, and Vince Survinski. This one isn't quite as good, and sometimes seems a little daunting with some many people involved (it's hard to figure out who's talking at times), but is still a pretty solid commentary.

Also included is the Treatment/Original Script, Personal Scrapbooks and Memorabilia, a spoof entitled: "Night of the Living Bread", the last interview of the late Duane Jones, a Judith Ridly interview, a written piece about the beginning of The Latent Image/Hardman Eastman Studios including some of their commercial work, Scenes from a "lost" Romero film called: "There's Always Vanilla", a Theatrical poster and stills from that same film, and a Theatrical Trailer and TV Spot for "Night of the Living Dead:. Also included on the back is a letter from George A. Romero, and on the inside is an insert letter written by Stephan King.

All in all this DVD is pretty good, and I'm glad that "Night of the Living Dead" got one of this caliber.
