New Nightmare
The Plot
Director Wes Craven is having nightmares again, and is writing a
new screenplay. Nancy Thompson is asked to take part in the new film. However,
it won't be a Robert Englund that makes her scream.
The Movie
No one does "A Nightmare on Elm Street" and Freddy Krueger like
Wes Craven, as proved by the 7th entry entry into the "Nightmare" series. One of
the great aspects of the original film, is how Wes was able to create that
fuzzy line between what was real and what was a dream. And in this movie, he
creates that same feeling. Only this time that fuzzy line is created between
real life for the actors themselves, the "reel" life for the actors, and the crazy
dreamworld that is Freddy Krueger.
One of the great things about this film, as usual with Wes Craven, is the
attraction of the story. There is something truly interesting about the idea
that the film is essentially about the real life actors, and them having to deal
with the fact that Freddy Krueger may not just be a story. It not only makes it
seem more real, something you can connect with, but it also is just something
you don't get to see very often, if ever.
The effects are also as good as ever. The make-up for Freddy Krueger is very
different but solid. The gore effects are pretty good, but nothing too
noteworthy (although there is tribute to one of the great kills from the first
film). Also the numerous Freddy effects, as well as the many earthquake effects are
top notch and overall pretty impressive. However, I must admit I'm not overly
enthusiastic about Freddy's new glove, but I do understand and see a reason
for it.
Overall if you liked the previous "Nightmare" films (especially the original)
then you'll like this one too. The most casual and hardcore fans with
something worthy of their time. And gorehounds won't be oerjoyed, but will be
adequately pleased.
The DVD
The DVD is alright. The visual and sound transfers are pretty solid,
and nothing to be unhappy with. As for the extras, we don't get much here. We
get a great audio commentary with director Wes Craven, per usual. We also get
cast and crew bios, and a theatrical trailer. You also get several DVD-Rom
extras, such as the ability to read the screenplay, a trivia game, and
up-to-the-minute cast and crew info. Overall the DVD leaves something to be
desired.
