Review Quote
"Leviathan is about as general as you can get. The film is basically The Thing
meets Alien meets Deep Star Six. But those looking for entertaining, if not
original, creature feature fun, they’ve checked out the right movie."

The Plot
The crew of a deep sea mining rig discovers a sunken ship containing the
remnants of a genetic experiment gone wrong. A monster that can grow from
victims that drink its cells is now onboard, and now only Beck (Weller) and the
rest of his crew can defeat it.
The Movie
Just reading the plot, I’m assuming you thought “Boy, this sounds like another
creature feature.” And, yes, if you thought so, you’re right.
Leviathan is about as general as you can get. The film is basically The Thing
meets Alien meets Deep Star Six. But those looking for entertaining, if not
original, creature feature fun, they’ve checked out the right movie.
The cast is made up of quite a few decently well known actors. Peter Weller
(Robocop) plays the hero of the film exactly how you would expect a hero in this
type of film to be played. He’s not bad, but he’s nothing memorable. Richard
Crenna (Rambo) plays the role that he himself described as “the
old-man-trying-to-forget-his-past” role. Crenna wisely tried to play against the
ho-hum role by not playing the moping, washed up loser, but instead playing a
man who almost likes the fact he’s lower on the corporate ladder now. But the
derivative screenplay weakens his efforts.
The FX are suitably fantastic, done by FX guru Stan Winston (Predator, Aliens,
Terminator). The morphing effects are a refreshing relief from CGI filled films
of today, and the final creature is deadly and almost seems like what would
happen if The Thing assimilated a fish. The location is also neat, and the
underwater effects were convincing as hell.
Be warned, however, Leviathan is about as general as a creature feature film
could be. But those seeking some good, un-intelligent fun will find Leviathan a
worthy choice.
The DVD
The DVD has some truly excellent menus and menu transitions, and while they use
somewhat dated graphics, they’re still decent. The picture is fine, and so is
the sound. The DVD features a trailer and a very interesting behind the scenes
booklet. This is a decent DVD package.
