Jeepers Creepers

The Plot
Trish and her brother Darry are nearly run off the road by a speeding truck while returning home. When they see their pursuer dumping a body-like object down a pipe, they investigate and find a secret too horrible to imagine.

The Movie
Jeepers Creepers is one of the best horror films of the past ten years and offers horror fans a great, creative new villain in The Creeper. Relying more on atmosphere than all out gore, Jeepers Creepers relies on the shadows and creepiness than gruesome shock.

Justin Long and Gina Phillips have great on screen chemistry and they carry the whole story along well. The makeup effects are impressive, especially the Creeper’s face when it is at long last revealed. Filled with atmospheric lighting, creepy irony, and subtle black humor, Jeepers Creepers has much to recommend.

There is one large problem. The whole story is held together by an event that is positively unrealistic and does not fit the characters at all. When they return to the Creeper’s Lair and look down the pipe, I was dumfounded by their stupidity.

However, most horror films have this problem, and it certainly doesn’t stop Jeepers Creepers. It is a refreshing take on the horror genre in the form of slasher meets creature feature. I’ll be surprised if any of its sequels, which will probably be produced, top the original.

The DVD
Great. We get an audio commentary first. Then we get a whole mess of deleted scenes for appetizers. And, for the main course, we get Behind the Peepers, an excellent making of documentary. Finally for desert, we are served a photo gallery and trailers. A great DVD.
