Jaws
The Plot
A shark attacks a girl on the shore of Amity. However, when the shark
shows up again it appears the shark is not going away anytime soon. Three men
join together to put to the shark to an end.
The Movie
There is a reason "Jaws" became the best grossing movie of
all-time when it came out in 1975. There is also a reason why it was nominated
and won several awards and other accolades. That reason is: "Jaws" is just
overall a fantastic movie! It doesn't matter what kind of movies you like.
Horror-gurus, drama-hounds, and action-seekers alike all will have something for
them in this film.
When I first watched "Jaws" I thought well, it's directed by Steven
Spielberg, and has some pretty well-known actors in it; it'll probably be pretty
good. Boy was I wrong, it was better than pretty good. The film blew me away. I
was so amazed I watched the movie the next day. Everything about it is or is
nearly perfect.
The tenseness of the film is one of the best parts. Spielberg does a wonderful
of creating an enormous amount of anxiety, and yet, he does so without even
really showing you the shark. In fact one of Spielberg's initial ideas was he
didn't want to even show the [whole] shark for the first hour of the movie.
This tactic worked very, very well. So when he finally does show the audience
the shark, you are pretty amazed, and you get edgy all over again.
Now this was back in the 70's when CGI was not the big thing. Thus the shark
could not just be created by a computer. So they had a robotic shark created,
and while viewing for an extended period of time might reveal its fallacy,
Spielberg shows the shark limitedly and this helps to keep the realism of the
shark.
This film has quite possibly the best score for any movie, ever. And even if it
doesn't it presents us with the best and probably most well-known movie theme
in the history of film. John Williams is a great composer, and his music on this
movie is just brilliant.
So I don't care who you are; if you like movies, or even if you don't like
movies, you should see "Jaws". I think you will be quite surprised with this
film. I know it sounds like I love this movie, and well I do. So perhaps I am
biased. However, I think "Jaws" is good enough (even if my opinion of it is
in fact inflated) that it warrants at least one viewing.
The DVD
This DVD is pretty good. It's not the best I've seen, but it's up
there. The visual and audio transfers are superb, and the amount and quality of
extras are very first-class. There is a making of "Jaws" documentary that is
purely greatness, and is extremely interesting. However, I've heard that it
has been cut from its original version, which makes me sad, but regardless
the one presented is very cool. They have some outtakes and deleted scenes. A
"Get out of the Water!" trivia game, which I found pretty useless, but some
people may like that kind of thing. They had a shark world extra, that just gave
a whole bunch of (un-film related) information on sharks, which was pretty
interesting. There's also production photos, storyboards, original theatrical
trailers, and a DVD-ROM screen saver for your computer. The only thing I really
wanted that wasn't given was audio commentary, but that's OK.
