Region 1
Ichi The Killer

The Plot
Yakuza boss Anjo goes missing and second in command Kakihara will stop at nothing to find him. His loyal gang set out to terrorize and interrogate all possible suspects which leads them to Ichi - a ruthlessly insane killer who has almost super human powers when provoked. However, there is even a greater force behind Ichi who prefers to use his mind instead of brute force. One must win the battle of the sadists.

The Movie
Director Takashi Miike (Audition, Gozu) is known for his extremely gory and disturbing films and Ichi the Killer is certainly one of them. Actually, it is the most gory of them all. Yet at the same time the gore/violence is also very cartoonish like Peter Jackson's Dead-Alive. This, as Miike himself explains is due to Ichi the Killer being based on a Japanese comic book. The movie starts out fast paced, but unfortunately slows down near the middle. Some scenes are extended to unbearable lengths. Miike was never good with pacing anyway. The greatness of Ichi the Killer lies within its unique characters, situations, and a ridiculous amount of gore. It is also very nicely shot.

The DVD
This is a Dutch DVD, but it is obviously catered toward English speaking people. What makes this DVD special is that it's fully uncut which means you'll get to see more gore (like blood gushing from peoples necks) and some new rather useless/boring scenes. Hey, I'll take more gore any time of the week. What ultimately sets this DVD apart from the region 1 uncut DVD has to be the extra features. I say "has to be" because I have not seen the extra features on the region 1 DVD, but from what I have read it doesn't even have HALF the features that this DVD does.

This is a 2-disc DVD set and the second "Bonus Disc" is LOADED with good features. All it is missing (that the region 1 version contains) is the standard running commentary track by the director & writer. It doesn't matter, because the interviews (some are very lengthy) and the behind the scenes featurette is just plain AWESOME. It also has something called an "Electronic Press Kit" which is like a behind the scenes, but it shows more. My only complaint is with the dubbing (at least it has it) that slows down the movie while you watch it, but you can turn it off and use subtitles. Extra features also have English subtitles. No complaints about the picture and sound quality.
