The House By The Cemetery
The Plot
The Boyle family into a house in Boston formally owned by a Dr. Freudstein. However, what the family doesn't know is there just might be someone else living within that same house.
The Movie
This is another gem from the godfather of gore: Lucio Fulci. Again casting the actress Catriona McCall, Fulci proves he deserves the notoriety with this bloody masterpiece. The same Fulci style is present all throughout the film.
The gore is simply wonderful, though the bat scene is a little over the top, if not a little corny. However, it makes no difference; the blood and bodily harm is simply fantastic. Giannetto De Rossi is simply magnificent, as always. The intensity is again all a truly a great part of Fulci's style, including his always apparent close-ups on the eyes. Fulci makes the thrill of watching his films all too easy of a task, and in fact is practically a genius in those terms. The plot-holes are present, nothing truly horrid, but there's enough of them to kind of make you irritated. I got over it, and so will you. Also Walter Rizzati's score is simply amazing. It's eerie, scary, weird, and just completes the movie.
I must warn you all though, this is perhaps the worst dubbing of a film I have ever seen. Not that they're all off or anything; they just got the hands down most annoying kid in the world for the voice of Bob, the Boyle's son. I mean seriously, you may think I'm just overly picky or something, but no, seriously, this kid is so ridiculously annoying that I wished his death from the moment his lips opened, just so I wouldn't have to hear him anymore. "Can you get me some candy?" Seriously... really annoying.
Overall this film is one of Fulci's better films. Gore hounds will be easily pleased; Fulci fans will be quite happy; and your more average and hardcore fans will probably find something they like. However, again I must reiterate, Fulci is not for everyone, just be careful. However, Fulci has deservedly earned at least a single viewing from any horror fan.
The DVD
This Diamond Entertainment release is pretty bad. It is two minutes longer than the "Zombie Hell House" version I had acquired before. That may not seem like a lot, but hey, two minutes is two minutes. The visual and audio transfers are pretty damn good (and a major upgrade over my prior version). However, the extras are very lacking. You get a promotional option, which just shows a bunch of other Diamond Entertainment releases, and is pretty worthless. There's a facts/bio (though quite short) about Fulci.
That's it though; can I give zero stars?
