Halloween
The Plot
This is the beginning of the immortal saga of Michael Myers. Here, we learn that the troubled man behind the mask killed his older sister when he was just six, leading to his enclosure in an asylum. 15 years later, he would escape from the asylum and return to his hometown of Haddonfield, Illinois to continue his rampage. Hot on his trail is his doctor, Sam loomis, the only man who truly understand the severity and threat of Michael. Thus begins a single night of fear and bloodshed as a babysitter and her friends become involved in the hellish events that would take place that fateful Halloween night in Haddonfield.
The Movie
How can you not love this film? This movie is a true classic, pure and simple. Whether it's the simplicity of the tactics that the movie uses to achieve fear or the good acting, this film is great. Carpenter's all too classic score reverberates the nerves every time I watch it and it is simply phenomenal. The villiain is of course, disturbing, mainly due to the fact that he is so silent and holds such a dangerous feel around him. To see him staring at you across the street is purely and simply...eerie (heh heh).
Donald Pleasence simply makes the movie with his awesome performance as Dr. Loomis. He is one of the best characters in horror history, thanks in part to great and memorable dialouge and some great acting from Mr. Pleasence. Jamie lee Curtis makes her feature film debut and comes off very nicely, cementing her hold as "the scream queen". Although the other actors are nothing incredible, they still do good.
My only gripe is that the movie takes a tad too long to set up before all hell finally breaks loose. But it's a flaw one can easily overlook. This movie has virtually no gore and it doesn't need any since it relies on setting, score, lighting and other primal elements to make your hair stand on end. Just an incredible movie overall, one that no horror fan can dare let escape their collection.
The DVD
Anchor bay (who brought us such great DVDs for Evil Dead, Hills Have Eyes and many others) knows what horror fans want and they deliver once again. The menus use the famed score amongst some neat scene montages from the movie.
The features include an incredibly in depth documentary that runs just four minutes shy of the film itself! We also get a short featurette concerning the Myers' House circa modern times, Tv spots,a 14 page booklet, audio commentary, trailer, radio spots and cast bios. Although the main event is the epic documentary, the other features are still cool, they just have an underwhelming feel to them. Still, well worth any fan's hard earned cash! You can usually pick it up new for $US18-20.
