Ginger Snaps 2: Unleashed
The Plot
Brigette Fitzgerald has fled the Canadian suberb of Bailey Downs, after infecting herself with her late sister, Ginger's tainted werewolf blood. She has become addicted to Monkshood, a venom that subsides the beast lurking within. After a confrontation with another werewolf, she passes out. Being mistaken for a junkie, Brigette awakens to find herself in a rehabilitation clinic. With her precious monkshood locked away, Brigette must deal with the other werewolf (who has been stalking her) and her own awakening savage beastial side.
The Movie
This is the follow-up to the awesome but overlooked Canadian film, Ginger Snaps. Right from the start, you know this film is special as it features one of the most unsettling opening sequences I've seen in awhile. Emily Perkins delivers a brilliant performance as a very conflicted individual. Couple that with the strange characters that populate this movie and you've got one hell of an odd film.
The settings are beautifully stark and depressing, perfect for the movie's tone and it seems to resemble a gothic, modern Grimm's Fairie Tale at times. The effects, while nothing special, are a step up from the predecessor. Also, the haunting musical score is truly captivating and definetly enhances the experience. Downfalls are few. The ending of the film disappointed me as I find it to be a tad underwhelming and anti-climatic. The interesting twist is indeed bizarre and kind of depressing, but it just didn't click. Also, the film seems to leave some potential untapped.
Overall though, the strong points definetly counter the negative and this movie was only slightly less impressive than the original. Still, an awesome movie, one that no werewolf fan can let slip by. I look forward to seeing more of Perkin's work in the future. Oh yeah and the gore is...disturbing! Lots of up-close needle punctures...
The DVD
Slightly disappointing. We get some deleted scenes, storyboard comparisons, and Production art. The art consists of three pages from Brigette's journal and three pages from Ghost's comic book. Ehhh...The menus are motionless but at least the images look cool. The sound and picture transfer are good enough. The best is the commentary. Although it can be hard to hear, it offers insight on everything from continuity errors, inspiration, techincal info and FX breakdowns. Most stores sell this for US25$! It's a good movie but not worth that. I was lucky enough to track down a used copy for US10$ so hunt one down. Hopefully, Ginger Snaps Back will have a better DVD.
