The Evil Dead
The Plot
Five innocent friends drive up to an isolated cabin for a week of solitude and fun. Ash, Cheryl, Scotty, Linda and Shelly are their names. What they do not suspect, is that there is an evil force lurking in the nearby woods. Within the cabin, they discover three mysterious items. A dingy, old tape recorder and two very bizarre artifacts: The Book of the Dead and The Dagger of the Dead. They decide to have a little fun and play the tape that was already inside the recorder. What they do not know, is that this tape is filled with aincient incantations used to raise demons from their eternal slumber. Thus, the dark forces are unleashed upon the five and a night of bloodshed and fear begin. One by one, they are posessed by the demons and forced to turn on their own friends. At the end of it all, Ash is the one man left standing and he must battle the evil force and his posessed pals. What role do the other artifacts play in this nightmare? Morning is far away...can Ash survive until then??
The Movie
Evil Dead is considered by many to be a classic and a legend in the horror genre. This ultra-low budget splatter-fest went on to attain cult-classic status and make stars out of Bruce Campbell and Sam Raimi. This film holds an almost subliminal, primal sense of fear and terror. Ground-breaking camera techniques and eerie (not to mention effective) sound effects up the ante. The sense of isolation that the setting portrays, makes the film that much more unsettling.
The acting certaintly isn't great but the young actors are downright freaky in their demonic forms. The Linda demon especially with her doll-like giggle. Campbell is good as Ash although his character has yet to attain his B-movie icon status as of yet. **shudder**. Overall, I feel the only downfalls for this awesome movie are a dated feel and some sub-par acting. The large abundance of continuity errors is forgivable considering the film's low budget! A large amount of gore, cool camera techniques, eerie score and an almost primitive sense of dread, make for one of the coolest horror films of all time. Truly deserving of it's classic reputation!
The DVD
Having reviewed the Book of the Dead edition of the DVD, I apologize if there are any errors in my description. however, the original DVD (US13$ usually) has a bevy of nifty extras!
Overall, I recommend the Book of the Dead Edition. It's more expensive, but the collectible latex cover is more than worth it! But if you're not a collector and can go without a few extre features, go ahead with the ordinary version.
