Evil Dead 2
The Plot
It's another tale of Ash, possessed beings, that evil cabin, and
the Book of the Dead.
The Movie
Having seen the original movie of the series, "The Evil Dead", I
figured that "Evil Dead 2" was worth a viewing. My impression of this film is
a very mixed one. First off I must claim that "Evil Dead" (in my opinion) is
a great and classic horror movie. So my feelings of "Evil Dead 2" is that
it's a bit lacking, in terms of my expectations. Don't get me wrong, "Evil Dead
2" is a real good horror movie, it's just not on par with it's predecessor.
My first major problem with the film (which they discuss in the commentary)
is that the beginning is a bit confusing. Did he go back to the cabin? Is it
supposed to be the same footage (even though it's obviously not). However,
you're able to get passed it easily as the rest of the movie easily gets you into a
trance. My second problem is the addition of humor. Not to say that the
first film was without humor, I just felt that the amount of humor displayed in
this film just ends up lessening the value of it.
However, I did enjoy the movie. Sam Raimi's direction is as clever as the
original, and is as always, highly entertaining. The special effects are
amazing, maybe even better than the original. Bruce Campbell's acting is solid,
and you can definitely see the transformation of his character from a bumbling,
regular guy, to a bumbling action hero.
So for fans of the first film, this is definitely worth a viewing. For even
just the most casual of horror fans, this is worth a look (especially if you
like nods of humor). If you're a gorehound, you'll easily enjoy this movie,
even if some of the gore effects are a little over the top. So overall, if you
like horror, "Evil Dead 2" should be seen by you.
The DVD
The Anchor Bay release of this DVD is a pretty solid one. The
visual transfer is OK. Many spots in the film are too dark, but you can get by
with it. The Sound transfer is also nothing special, but is much better than
the visual.
The extras are nothing to frown at. You get a solid audio commentary with
director Sam Raimi, Star Bruce Campbell, CO-writer Scott Spiegel, and special
effects artist Greg Nicotero. They all remember quite a bit about the film, and
all seem to be having a great time reminiscing. You also get a featurette,
"The Gore the Merrier", talking a lot about some of the special effects. I
found this to be very interesting. There's also theatrical trailer, still
galleries, talent bios (or Campbell and Raimi), and a "Evil Dead: Hail to the
King" video game preview.
Overall the DVD is pretty good. There's always a want for more and more
extras. However, this DVD is absolutely nothing you can complain about.
