Earth vs The Spider
The Plot
Nerdy Security Guard Quentin, a nice but shy person who loves comic books, is
never taken seriously and is pushed around. When his partner is killed and the
media focuses on the event as his fault, he injects himself with a drug he saw
being used in the lab he works in before on spiders with amazing results.
Quentin does change, at first in good ways, but spider instincts start to take
over him.
The Movie
I love browsing the local Blockbuster through the usual Direct to Video trash
released. It’s like digging in one place for a long time. Because, every once in
awhile, I find some gold. Like this horror gem, lost in the usual Direct to
Video offerings. The storyline is a nice kind of The Fly meets Spiderman type
ditty that works well. I really liked the whole kind of “Not Everyone Can be a
Hero” story.
Devon Gumersall held through the movie with his performance as Quentin. He was
sympathetic and likeable through the whole film, even when he was sucking people
dry. He was trying so hard to be the good guy but loses the battle with his own
instincts. The Special Effects are by Special Effects God Stan Winston and I
think that says it all. The final creature is outstanding.
What really bugs me is the fact that some characters are given screen time they
don’t deserve because they’re being played by someone you’ve heard of. I’m
talking about Dan Aykroyd as Detective Jack Grillo. Does Aykroyd do a bad job?
Under no circumstances. In fact, he’s actually good. But is his character given
too much screen time? Hell yes. I have nothing against Aykroyd’s performance,
but I’d prefer if Grillo was left as more of a side character.
But, besides this, the film is very good considering that it’s Direct to Video.
It’s almost like a What If tale of Spiderman: This is what would happen to Peter
Parker if he succumbed to his desire to do what would help him most and to
forget about the right thing to do. Earth vs. the Spider is a great horror
sleeper I would recommend to horror fans.
The DVD
Better than average. We get a miniscule featurette that’s harmless and
interesting but could use a lot more substance. The best feature, a Photo
Gallery, has Movie Stills (love the ones of the monster), Behind the Scenes
Stills, and Creature Design Stills (the best gallery). Theatrical Trailers are
also included. An all around decent DVD.
