Dog Soldiers
The Plot
A squad of soldiers are participating in routine War games mission in the Scottish Highlands. There have been tales of missing hikers in the area and strange howls in the night. After they discover their rival team slaughtered like hogs, they realize they are dealing with a formidable, hostile enemy. As the night descends, they barricade themselves in an old farmhouse. The hills are the hunting ground for a pack of bloodthirsty werewolves and they will stop at nothing to claim their prey. However, the squad then discovers that one amongst them has a secret agenda....
The Movie
What a nice surprise. I often have bad experiences with direct-to-video releases but this British horror gem is well worth anyone's time. This film is in the vein of Predator as it touches that overlooked sub-genre of "soldiers vs. monsters". Beautiful cinematography combined with classic war-style "shaky-cam" techniques make the film that much more exciting. The acting is cool and the dialouge contains subtle homages to everything from "Bridge on the River Kwai" to "The Matrix".
Minor flaws include a slow start and some mediocre effects. The wolves look interesting, but the low budget is obvious. The gore effects often include actual animal innards which are interesting. The movie has good characters that you either really respect or really abhorr. All in all, this is a very exciting film and quite under-rated in my opinion. Great performances and bloody, adenaline pumped action can make this film the sleeper hit of 2002.
Don't let this one slip under your radar!
The DVD
Not bad for direct-to-video. The features includes 2 trailers (one for America, one for Britain), commentary track and a 20 minute making-of-documentary. Also, the menu theme music is really catchy! Kudos to composer Mark Thomas for that intense, primal drum beat score! You can usually find this for US8-10$ so it's highly recommended, if for the great movie alone.
