Dead & Buried
The Plot
In the town of Potter's Bluff, all is not as it seems. First of all it's a photographer on a lonely beach who's seized by an angry mob and burned alive. A drunken old fisherman is the next victim - gruesomely tortured as his throat is slit. Sheriff Dan Gillis is a man who's determined to find out what sinister secrets lie beneath these acts of terrible violence.
The Movie
This is my favourite zombie movie, even though it's not all that hyped up as being one. This is a somewhat slow movie, it's not one of those films where you see a zombie and you shoot it or anything like that. There are attacks and the Sheriff tries to find answers as to what is going on. It's more of a mystery when I watch it, rather than a horror.
This movie really caught me off guard, since I am not a huge fan of zombie flicks. I was very intrigued about the story to the film and it was well excuted, especially the ending which was one of the biggest twists I had ever seen in any movie. The acting is as good as any 80's horror film that I can remember (not oscar worthy but not cheesy). The characters all seem to have a story about themselves that you wish you knew about. Not many people know this but Robert Englund (most people will know of him as Freddy Krueger) is in this movie, as this is one of his earlier films.
I'd recommend this film to any horror buffs out there who claim to be a "true horror fan" or anyone who digs zombie flicks. If you're into the modern, mainstream movies you may want to give this one a miss.
The DVD
Now here's a problem. This is an ugly transfer, the picture quality is not very good. I'm not sure if this is because of a lousy transfer or that the film was just like this when it was first released but I have heard that the region 1 copy sold in America has good picture and sound quality so I must believe that this is just a bad transfer. The picture seems very hazy and grainy, especially during the first half of the film. It's like watching a TV channel where the picture isn't 100% clear (fuzzy, if you know what I mean). The sound isn't too bad, Dolby Digital 2.0 is all expected from this release. Don't expect any extras, there are none.
A Lousy DVD but still buy it if you like the movie. It's very cheap to buy here in Australia, I picked up my copy for AU$10. There should also be a limited 2 disc set floating around that you can pick up which is also released in America. Pick that one up if you can find it but be warned, the format on that DVD is NTSC instead of the Australian PAL standard.
