Dark Harvest
The Plot
Sean has recently discovered that his biological father (he's adopted) has died and he has inheirited the family farm. So he takes off to check it out, fiancee and 3 friends in tow. Once they arrive there, Sean is visited by the spirit of an old woman who informs him that his father made a pact with the devil. Apparently, his father exchanged a lifetime of good crops in exchange for the blood of the innocent. When the harvest moon rises, the spirits of his father's victims will arise from the grave to reap bloody vengeance (pardon the pun). Of course, the group arrives one night before the harvest moon. When the fateful night arrives, the souls inhabit the cornfield's three scarecrows and set off to slaughter Sean and his friends. Scared yet? Me neither.
The Movie
Tsk tsk tsk. When I saw this movie i was cautious but the box art was so cool I decided to rent it. What a waste of 4 dollars! Granted, this is a low-budget 16mm film but it's inexcusable for how poor this movie really is. The acting is atrocious. Digiulio plays the lead with an emotionless and seemingly bored performance." How 'bout some fire scarecrow?"...worst rip-off of The Wizard of OZ ever! York plays the token black guy who delivers all the "funny" one-liners. and hit the mute button whenever Jenny Leigh talks because that accent is really annoying.
Some good gore might have been a saving grace. But sadley, we get generic scythe killings and offscreen carnage. We see entrails maybe once but they look so fake. One clever death involving a meat hook and a rake was interesting, but that's it. The scarecrows look awful too. At times, their eyes flash red. Hell, I could probably create a better effect without even trying! This film really doesn't have one redeeming quality. I actually fell asleep watching it and that rarely happens! The cover art is nice and the end credits have blooper footage sprinkled thorughout but that can't save this baragin bin fodder. Now, excuse me while I go do something more fun than watching this, like... um... anything.
The DVD
Well...it's about what I expected. The film is grainy, but it is 16mm. At least the audio is clear. The menus are neat. As per features we get a trailer gallery with trailers for: The Punisher, Godsend, Ginger snaps: Unleashed, S.I.C.K., Nine Lives, Serial Killing 101 and Dark Harvest of course. This sucker sells for US20$. Good God, what were they thinking...
