The Plot
Two Masters of the Macabre, Stephen King and George Romero, bring you 5 tales of
horror: Father’s Day- The Tale of a deceased father back for his traditional
cake, The Lonesome Death of Jody Verill- About a crashed meteor that causes
everything to grow, Something to Tide you Over- The tale of a millionaire who
liquidates his wife and her lover, The Crate- About something not quite dead in
a Crate found under the stairs, and They’re Creeping Up on You- The Tale of a
cruel millionaire’s just deserts at the hands of millions of roaches.
The Movie
Ever since I saw this movie, it’s been a favorite of mine. Romero’s Directing
gives the film the complete feel of Classic EC Horror Comics, and the opening
credits scene, in which reality is converted to animation, is one of the best
horror movie opening credits scenes ever, in my opinion. King’s Screenplay gives
the film a perfect combination of black comedy and horror.
Father’s Day is a
brainless, but fun story that features some nice corpse effects by Tom Savini.
The Lonesome Death of Jody Verill is the weakest story, but it’s still fun and
King gives a completely ridiculous and zany performance as Jody. Something to
Tide you Over is the Second Best story, featuring Leslie Nielsen as a merrily
mad millionaire. Its old premise is taken up a notch by its unique killing
method. The Crate is the best story, with great effects by Savini, some great
laugh out loud scenes, and an absolutely bitchy performance by Adrienne Barbeau.
They’re Creeping up on You has good effects by Savini, some nice dark humor, good gore, and a good performance by E.G. Marshall
as Upson Pratt.
All in all, Horror fans should give this movie a look, for it’s
one of the best horror anthologies out there.
The DVD
A Trailer. That’s it. However, it’s interesting to see that a scene on the
trailer is not actually in the film. An abandoned story? Possibly...
