Cabin Fever
The Plot
Five friends travel to a cabin in the woods to celebrate the end of
college. What they find out there, something quite deadly, just may surprise you.
The Movie
I was a little reluctant to see this movie. I figured it was one
of those newer "in" horror movie ala "I Know What You Did Last Summer". I mean
I figured Rider Strong meant lame. However, I heard so many good things that I
decided to plop some money and see what this flick was all about.
What I found was one of the best horror movies I have seen in the last few
years. I was overwhelmed with how deep and rich this movie is. So I must admit I
had pigeonheld this movie all wrong, and I'm glad that I finally saw it.
***SPOILERS***
The first thing that's great about this movie is the fact that the
killer isn't some crazed lunatic with a knife it's a flesh-eating virus. An
idea that was very unique and was definately one of the things that made this
movie as good as it was. Also the fact that all the friends began to turn on
each other, added another layer of conflict, which was an impressive underlying
feeling. It all was reminiscent of when the AIDS virus first came out.
***END SPOLIER***
The score is one of the best I've heard in a long time. It's creepy and moody
and is a great addition to the film. The directing, by newcomer Eli Roth, is
overly impressive. Yes, it does dabble in homage to many of the great horror
films of the past. However, Roth adds enough new stuff that this film
definately becomes his own. And the special effects come from the good ol' boys
at KNB, and as always are pretty impressive.
All in all I recommend this movie to all horror movie fans, especially
for all you gorehounds out there. This movie should have something for everyone,
and I hope if you haven't already, you see it soon.
The DVD
The DVD for this film is quite impressive. The picture and sound
quality are top notchand pretty impressive. The extras are where this DVD really
shines. First off if you like audio commentaries, then you be very pleased.
This movie comes with five audio commentaries. Yeah, go ahead, go back and read
that line again, seriously it's OK. Yes, that's right five different audio
commentaries. You get one with Director, the male cast, the female cast, the
filmmakers, and Rider Strong. One thing I didn't like about the commentaries is
Eli Roth is on all of them (which had its pros and cons), and lots of the people
weren't there for the whole commentary. However, all in all, the commentaries
were entertaining and quite informative. I especially enjoyed the director
commentary with Eli Roth, and the commentary with Rider Strong and Eli Roth.
Also included as extras a making of feature: "Beneath the Skin: The making of
Cabin Fever", a Family Friendly Version of the film, a Chick-O-Vision
feature, a trailer, an extra with on of the more odd cast members, and some
director's shorts that Eli Roth did earlier in his career called the "Rotten
Fruit".
Overall the DVD is vastly entertaining and will keep you entertained for
hours upon hours, and makes the DVD easily worth buying.
