The Brood
The Plot
Frank's wife and Candy's mother, Nola, is working with Dr. Hal Raglan using an innovative psychiatric treated called Psychoplasmics to help her deal with her rage. However, as their sessions continue the people she's angry with began to die. Just who is responsible for these murders.
The Movie
From director David Cronenberg, who later brought us "The Fly" and "Scanners", comes to us with one of his earlier films: "The Brood". Having seen a couple of Cronenberg's (most notably are the two that I motioned) other films, I saw this one real cheap, and decided to give it a try. Boy did I get the screwgie.
This film wasn't horrendous, but it wasn't very good. The story is a little far-fetched, even for a horror movie. I don't really want to give all that much away, but I must say that the movie was just all right, until the ending; that's when the film took a very dramatic fall. The ending is ridiculous and has no explanation to even back it up.
The effects are solid, but nothing overly impressive by any means. The score of Howard Shore is possibly one of the brighter spots of the film, though I have heard better (from Shore and others).
All in all, the movie can easily be skipped. If you want to check out David Cronenberg definitely pass this one up, at least until you see something else. I would only recommend this to people who are dying to see something new, and haven't seen this, or those who are big followers of Cronenberg; otherwise it's a waste.
The DVD
I wish the DVD was better than the film, but alas it's no better. The picture and audio transfers are solid, but nothing special. As for extras we get a rockin' theatrical trailer, and by rockin', I mean stupid.
Oh well, that's the breaks.
