The Amityville Horror

The Plot
A newly married couple (and their kids) move into a house with a horrible past. Soon, what was once a horrible past now seems to be a horrible present.

The Movie
Based on the best-selling novel Jay Anson (which was supposedly true), I assumed I was in for a real treat. Yet, for a (non-slasher) film that spawned so many sequels I was expecting a little more from "The Amityville Horror". The story starts off good, but soon the film just goes to slow, and does little to keep my attention. The beginning was intriguing and had some plot ideas that seemed very interesting. However, as soon as bad things start happening to the family, and they just pretty much ignore them, that's when I started losing interest.

***SPOILER***
Like when they find the gate to hell in their cellar, and then they just go on with their lives, and don't even really ever bring it up again. What's up with that?!?!?
***END SPOILER***

The film had great promise, and even some pretty OK acting. Nonetheless it could just not get past the obviously shallow script, and endless plotholes. For casual horror fans, don't bother, it's not worth your time. For more hardcore fans maybe this is worth a spin, just to have seen it at least once.

The DVD
The DVD is lacking. The visual and sound transfer are adequate, however, are nothing special. The extras, well they're almost nonexistent. You can watch it in both full and widescreen, and you get a theatrical trailer. Just another reason "The Amityville Horror" comes up short.
