The Plot
A dangerous virus escapes from a London research facility. The few
survivors attempt to survive as they try to discover who or what is their true
enemy.
The Movie
I walked into this movie thinking it was going to be a zombie
film. It instead turned out to be so, so much more. This film is all about
atmosphere. The scene near the beginning when Jim (Cillian Murphy) wanders an
empty London is truly masterful. Also the movie doesn't contain an over abundance of
music. Often relying on silence to help create a mood of underlying fear and
wonder.
One of the things that make this movie work so well is the character building
that the film does. We spend more time with the characters, and their struggles
together, than we do dealing with the "infected". Unlike most movies of the
genre, the characters actually help progress and move the movie forward as
opposed to just being lamb to the slaughter. Another thing that makes this film so good, is it's multifaceted storyline.
The characters start off trying to survive the virus and avoid the "infected"
at all costs. Near the latter part of the movie, the characters must deal with
a totally different series of obstacles.
The film obviously isn't a low budget film in any respect. However, it's
not a highly funded movie either. The effects are pretty good. There's plenty
of blood and gore in this film. However, it's not over the top, and actually
quite effective. It also does not at all overshadow the storyline. Which is good
because, the story is the movie. Don't come to this movie looking for a
slasher or even a zombie flick. However, if you're a fan of horror you should be
quite pleased with "28 Days Later".
The DVD
This is probably one of the better DVD's I have seen. The picture
and sound quality are top notch, and you can tell they tried to make it that
way. The DVD is also jam packed full of exciting extras that'll keep
you entertained. It has a pretty good audio commentary with director Danny
Boyle, and writer Alex Garland. Both have quite a bit of interesting information
to provide. There's some deleted scenes, with optional audio commentary. Also
included are 3 alternate endings. One of which, was never filmed and shown by
storyboard. However, it's very interesting and was one of the better extras
included. There's tons more to offer: a theatrical trailer, a making of
featurette, photo stills, animated storyboards, and a Jacknife Lee music video.
Overall the DVD is very good, and should not disappoint you.
