I have just seen your articles about the Mobile Home Park. Although you did not reveal the name of the location, I recognised it from the photographs and your descriptions of both the past uses of the land and the disturbing things which have taken place there. You see, I lived in different mobile homes on the park over a period which covered more than a decade.

Your American readers may erroneously assume that mobile homes in the UK are just caravans or trailers - however, though the British mobile home parks were created for much the same reasons as the trailer parks in the USA (lack of conventional housing after World War II and the inability of young families to afford 'bricks and mortar'), the mobile homes in this country are rarely like anything you'd see being towed behind a road vehicle. The official legislation limited the park owners to providing space and support for 'temporary' homes which don't have fixed foundations and thus can (at least in theory) be transported from place to place. In practice, mobile homes soon began to resemble bungalows and cottages; they got bigger and bigger and are now generally brought to the parks in sections and erected. In other words, they are (in all but name) pre-fabricated buildings.

As a young man, I initially leased one of the older, less attractive homes from the park owner - at that time there was a mixture of 'owners' and 'renters' on the site (a later owner phased out the rented homes). As soon as I moved in, I sensed that the atmosphere in my new home was very unpleasant - the only thing I can compare it to is the instinctive feeling you get when somebody is standing behind you and wordlessly staring. When I switched off the lights and went to bed, the feeling that I was not alone was replaced by scary visual confirmations of exactly how 'unalone' I really was.

As I lay in bed, I saw shadowy people walking around. These human shapes were very distinct and I could sometimes hear strange unformed snatches of speech too. I was naturally frightened by the sight of these phantom intruders at first - but then the realisation that they weren't normal, rationally-explainable things provoked even more awful thoughts. It seemed to me that I might have some kind of mental problem - I was seeing things - horrible things that were nightmare-ish and I started to doubt the state of my sanity. I think that, under such circumstances, most people would think the same way.

I didn't tell anybody about my experiences; if I was losing my mind, I was going to keep it to myself and do my best to cope. Strange as it may seem, I was able to force myself to stay put and sleep there every night - even though the shadows sauntered and flitted around so regularly that I rarely managed to avoid being woken up. The other person's description of the hideous thing standing by the side of his bed fits in with my own memory - I think that he had the misfortune to occupy the same home whilst he was waiting for his (then brand new) building to be completed.

My bedroom was situated at one end of the home; if I left all the doors open, I could lie in bed and see (in a direct line) right through to my living room (which was located at the other end of the building). Sometimes I would test my will to resist the bizarre things which were happening by opening all the doors when I retired for the night. This meant that I would see lots of the shadows moving through and around most of the rooms. It was disturbing, but I preferred to face my fear because that was better than hiding from it and letting it take charge.

I adopted a stray cat and he liked to sleep on my bed. One night I woke up with a familiar stab of dread and (all the doors being open), I saw many shadows meandering around - in the corridors, in my kitchen, in the living room, in the bedroom with me. But then I also saw something that gave me a profound sense of relief. The cat was lying on my bed and I could see him quite clearly too - his head was moving - he was watching the things intently. Quietly at first, then gradually louder, a low rumble started in his throat and chest - he was growling at the shadow people. Then I knew that I was not going crazy - my cat could see them too!

I lived in six homes on the site in all - as my status changed from renter to owner and I upgraded my living conditions over the years. I experienced similar (though less emphatic) things in some of them. Three of those buildings were quiet and unaffected by any kind of disturbances or strange happenings. Visits to the local history library confirmed that much of the land occupied by the mobile home park had been used as a cemetery. All of the quiet homes were on areas which had not been part of the cemetery.
