SpyderBaby: Hi there Blitzkid! Tell all the ghoul fiends out there who we're talking with?

GOOLSBY: Argyle Goolsby (bass/lead and backup vokills) and Billy Bones (drums/backup vokills) although he isn't here with us at the moment....

TB: TB Monstrosity (all guitars/lead and backup vokills)

SpyderBaby: Give us the scoop on how the band formed.

TB:We formed in the winter of 1997 after my old band, a "new school" punk band called Grape had just broken up. Obviously, the songs and the sound were much different than what they are now. We were first called A-Ok then Sad Sack. A friend of mine named Chris White (aka Wolfgang Christopher) was the first drummer, and Doc Stu Evilstein, who later became our second drummer was on bass. Some songs were horror related and some weren't. I'd say we owed more to the influence of Screeching Weasel and Face To Face than any dark Goth or horror bands at that time. After Wolfgang quit, we got Goolsby on bass and Evilstein switched over to drums... That's when we became a full blown horror band, cause we had always hinted at it. Evilstein was with us from late 97' to May 2001. That's when we got "the Psycho" Billy Bones to start drumming for us. We met him at a show of ours he attended in Bristol TN. We got in touch with him after Evilstein left, and within two weeks of him being in the band he had practiced with us twice, learned about 26 songs and recorded the new album. So he sorta had to deal with a trial by fire! But this lineup is the most complete and clicks the best out of any we've had. I hope we stay as we are, for a VERY long time to come.

SpyderBaby: Now you guys are not your "typical" horror punk "genre". I think its because you guys have your own unique sense of individuality that comes from your singing and your ability to play the instruments well.

TB:Thank you very much! I think we're proficient enough at our respective instruments, but we're not Rush or anything. We try not to pigeonhole ourselves within this genre, because the subject matter and imagery that goes along with it is very limiting sometimes. Writing songs in the same vein constantly gets boring too, we wanna challenge the way horror rock is viewed musically. We try to approach writing horror songs in a different way than most bands I think. Whereas a lot of horror bands write about strict brain eating and slasher films and what not, Blitzkid approach those themes in a melancholy kind of way. What I mean is, we do those typical horror lyrics from time to time too, I'm not knocking them AT ALL, cause they are fun and definitely sing along material. But in a sense, I think what sets us apart is the fact that when you read a lot of our lyrics, they play out as stories in your head, that romanticize the darker side of life and human nature, and that includes zombies, vampires, monsters, b-movies, sexuality, murder, the occult, suspense, real life tragedy, and fear. To sum it up, we make the disturbing or gory beautiful somehow.

SpyderBaby: Not to put down the other horror punk bands out there, but I think you guys rock!

TB:Again, thank you very much. There are also a lot of bands in this genre we respect and look up to as well though. All of us are fans of horror rock ourselves and we're always digging new bands. We appreciate any and all support we get from anyone and everyone...

SpyderBaby: What way do you think your music affects people?

TB:I think our music effects people on many different levels. I've had fans tell me that our music is violent, beautiful, sad, upbeat and scary all at the same time.

GOOLSBY: I think our music carries a lot of metaphorical content. a lot of our songs relate to issues such as relationships, personal angers, loss, being trapped in an unpleasant situation. I guess a lot of those related issues are negative, but thats life. You just have to deal with it head on. Music has always been my way of dealing with it. So in a way its therapy. The average person is going to react to a Blitzkid song negativelly. I know this from experience. Their sole mode of attention is focused only on the lyrics. The more understanding person is going to get it though. Underneath those lyrics are messages. A lot of those messages can be positive in a way. we try to arrange the music to be sympathetic to those lyrics.

SpyderBaby: You think it's something they can relate to?

TB:I think some of our songs people can definitely relate to, and that goes back to me mentioning that we deal with real life tragedy in some of our songs. For instance, "Dying Day" off a the new album is about me basically. I was really down and out almost two years ago, and I nearly killed myself. I had the knife to my wrist and everything but I just couldn't do it. Not a lot of people know about that, but I think everyone can relate to feeling like that in some way.

SpyderBaby:**How do you feel about all this?

TB:Hmmm...I think if we can motivate people to have a good time or have emotions, whether it's singing along to a total B movie inspired song, or they get really into it and wanna pit or just kinda stand back and take it all in, feel pain, feel the disturbing nature of our songs, or feel uneasy in any way then it's all worth it.

SpyderBaby: Alright, Tell me the truth, who does the song writing?

TB: Myself and Goolsby write all the songs, I'd say I write about 50% and he does the other half...Most of time I have completed ones or an idea or he has completed ones or ideas and we work it out together and then show it to Bones and then work out the kinks between the three of us. We also share the vocal duties, and from time to time Bones will sing backup too. He's really a good singer, just needs to let it out more. *L*

SpyderBaby:**These songs are just so compelling. One of my fav. is "These Walls" off the "Let flowers die" cd.. What inspires you the most to write them?

TB: I'll let Goolsby handle this one, cause it's his song entirely from start to finish.

GOOLSBY: Both TB and I share the song writing duties. Initially, TB held that position. I had no intentions on writing songs. In fact up until Blitzkid, I'd never even handled an instrument. I had no direction so no understanding of composition. My big thing up until then, and for the most part, still is painting. That was my outlet. Up to that point i was doing gig work with TB's previous band GRAPE. artwork, flyers, dropping their shit and banging up their equiptment. After a while of playing in Blitzkid, i just decided to write songs so i did. we kept a few and dropped a few. every now and then id write a song that was ok and we'd play it out. The complete lack of ability to understand myself and other people at times, what makes that so, and the confusion most contact with a human being brings inspires most of the songs i write.

SpyderBaby: What got you into "horror punk" ideals? by this i mean was it musically and spiritually. I see it as an expression of inner thoughts but yet something that can be put into every day living.

TB:I agree totally. I mean, don't get me wrong, we're not all decked out in ghoul makeup and stuff on a day to day basis, but it is something we live. I mean, we're all fascinated by horror because of it's escapist qualities and how it deals with the not so beautiful aspects of living and for me, I can always recall whenever I used to see a movie when I was younger that just scared the hell out of me. It's a separation of reality and fantasy. You know it's not real, and far fetched, but you can't help but think about it in a real life sense, like, "what if?" you know what I mean? I was just really fascinated by the whole image, the subject matter, the songs, all of it. My first exposure to "horror rock" was the Damned, the Misfits, Samhain, Danzig, TSOL and AFI. On a more comedic tip, probably GWAR, Mortician, and Impaler.

GOOLSBY: Since early childhood I've always sensed the connection of music and horror. I used to be scared shitless of Michael Jackson's "Thriller". Id hide behind the couch but still be compelled to watch it. This amazed me. As cheezy as it is now, it left an impression. Watching that video burned the beat of the song into my brain just because i was on such a heightened sense of awareness from fear. This is where my interest for the theatrics of a horror punk band came in to play when i discovered bands like the Misfits. They were doing the same thing, less scary, (or was i just older?) But they dealt with issues that made a lot of sense when you stripped the lyrics down. They were my adolescence more confused version of "Thriller".And they didnt give a fuck. and neither did i when i discovered them. There is such an underlying sense of longing and passion in those early misfit songs. I was a punk, they were punks. you get to being a punk sometimes from not having met certain connectons with people. i felt that in their music. I've felt it every day of my life.

SpyderBaby: Name all your cds out there now. From oldest to newest.. and name your favorite and why?

TB:In 1999 we released our first cd, a 7 song EP called "Revisited". Then, in the summer of 2000, we released our first full length, 13 songs, in "Terrifying Tales". And on Dec. 29th, 2001 we released our new full length album, "Let Flowers Die" which is 12 songs. My favorite is the new one hands down, because we've incorporated a lot more into it as far as sounds and influences. There's the typical Blitzkid sound, which is rooted in pop punk, and there's also Goth, thrash, Doowop, rockabilly and straight up rock n' roll. It's our most diverse album to date. I think it will get rid of any comparisons people may have.

SpyderBaby:**If have heard you correctly you had mentioned a past band called Grape, with that, Bury us with the dirt! Name past bands of you everyone.

GOOLSBY: This is my first band.

TB:*L* Oh ok....well here are mine, From 1991 to 1995 I played guitar and did vocals for a death/thrash metal band called Blood Covenant. Then for a few months, I was in a stoner rock/doom/emo/punk sorta band called Ziklag Chase, then a new school punk band called Grape from late 95 to early 97.

SpyderBaby: Any upcoming events or shows?

TB: We always have gigs and events going on, your best bet to get all of that information is to check out our website at Blitzkid website cause I can't remember everything we have going on right off of the top of my head *L* . One thing I am really looking forward to though, is our upcoming split 7" with our good friends Mister Monster, where they will be covering a song of ours and we'll cover one of theirs along with previously unreleased original material from the both of us. It's gonna be called "Exhuming Graves and Making Dates" and James Rowe is on board for the cover art. We're also going out for 2 weeks in June, the first week will be with Mister Monster, and then a week by ourselves on the "Ghosts of the East Coast" tour.

SpyderBaby: When not playing music, what kinds of things do you like to do?

GOOLSBY: Ive been skating for a little over 8 years, and given the fact we basically live in the "Mountain State", in what places you do find pavement, youll find endless fun or pain however fate sees fit, if youre into the ol' stuntwood. i try to do that as much as possible. Aside from that, i like to paint, read and be otherwise very boring.

TB: Jesus....Um, besides being otherwise very boring, I like to get online a lot (I'm the band's resident computer nerd), work out, watch pro wrestling, talk to my girlfriend ( Hi Abby!) and never leave the house.

SpyderBaby:**Ever pick up road kill? lol

GOOLSBY: Why? you want seconds? lol.

TB: We did actually give away a dead bird we found on the sidewalk at one of our shows once as a "prize", does that count?

SpyderBaby: Five to ten years from now what do you hope to accomplish musically? and where do you think you would be?

TB: Five years from now, hopefully signed to a decent sized indie label that will give us support to tour and promote us to the best of their small budgeted ability. Ten years from now? Still together and touring and making music with Blitzkid. It's my life . And if we do not ever get signed, rest assured, we'll continue on just to do it our fucking selves.

SpyderBaby: Any dreams about being rock stars?

TB:Absolutely not. My only dream is that people like what we do and support us and sing along at shows and that I wouldn't have to have a full time day job eventually with doing this. I wanna be able to pay my rent, and be comfortable, but no mansions or Mercedes are needed. We're all very approachable, down to earth people and we work hard at this everyday, and we will never cow down to being uppity pricks. You wanna talk to us at a show? Come talk to us, we don't bite unless ya ask us to.

GOOLSBY: Theres this one, where this band called STEEL DRAGON are needing a replacement singer, and they call me, a no one, to fill this legendary singers position and we make a shitty movie out of it. No really, my only dream in this is an audience and a way to travel to be with them.

SpyderBaby: If the fiends out there wanted to get in contact with you, like get a cd.How could they get it? Do you got a website?

TB:We do have a website as I mentioned earlier, and it's at http://www.geocities.com/cryptofblitzkid , ordering info for all of our cds is on there, and you can also email us at

SpyderBaby: It was really awesome of you guys to do this !! I wish you success in every part of your life!! Good Luck, not that you need it:) Any last comments you would like to add?

GOOLSBY: STAY BLUE!!!

TB: I just wanna thank you for doing this interview with us, for being a fan and giving us thought provoking, non typical questions. This one ranks as a favorite thus far. That's pretty much all I have to say except FANGS to all of our friends, fans and ROCKHARDHORROR for all the support. It means a hell of a lot. With that, LONG LIVE THE HORROR!!!!!!!!
