URBAN
LEGENDS: FINAL CUT

PLOT
Horrorfilm is a hot topic at Alpine University film school but Amy can't
seem to come up with any ideas and the dead lien for the film is tight.
When she finds out about the brutal killings based on urban legends at
another school, she decides to make a slasher with the same topic. Unfortunately,
someone seems to like her idea a bit too much and brings it to reality.
Torn between fear and paranoia, Amy has to find out who's killing all of
her crew while trying to finish her film.
REVIEW
If Scream helped starting the late 90's slasherwave, Urban Legends 2 sure
helped ending it. While Urban Legends: Final Cut is in my opinion extremely
underrated, it's still far from good. Using the same actor for two different
parts is always a big no-no, no matter what your excuse is. I've never been
very fond of these behind the scenes slashers as they always seem to be
quite cheesy. The Australian slasher Cut tried to use this concept aswell
and so did the low budget slasher Cut Throat aka Scared and I can safely
say that it didn't work for any of these three.
With an all-star cast you would imagine that the acting would have been
better than it was. Not to mention that only two people from the original
Urban Legend returned and only had small parts. I really dug the first
movie and I feel as if they could've done so much more with this sequel.
First of all they need to replace that awful mask that was just the worst
mask ever to be used in a slashermovie. Second of all they need to find
some more urban legends that people has actually heard of, I mean, I had
heard of almost all of the urban legends in the first movie but I had only
heard about two of the urban legends used in this, and they were pretty
stupid aswell.
John Ottman saves this film from becoming complete trash with his good
looking directing. While it doesn't live up to his directing in H20, there
are some scenes that are shot beautifully, for example the scene where Amy
walks through a park or a cemetery or something like that while it's snowing,
very powerful scene. It was hard to find flaws in the directing as I was
already much to busy laughing at stupid dialogues and chase scenes.
Urban Legends: Final Cut is far from as good as the first Urban Legend movie,
but it still does have some potential. The directing for once looks awesome
and the cast isn't all that bad, just worse than you would imagine from
such talented actors. The plot however felt very cliché and I didn't like
how some things turned out. Like in the ending, way too much was going on
and way too many survived and it was all the wrong persons. Surprisingly
enough, this didn't flop completely at the box-office so I wonder if we
will ever get to witness an Urban Legend 3, I kind of hope that we will.
GORE
Some slashed throats and knife stabbings along with some bloodsplatter and
a carved out liver (which looks very much like the ones that you can buy
from any nearby mall) and a very cool head dismembering.
SOUNDTRACK
A lot of pop music, which already felt kind of old. Then we have the average
"creepy" tension music to set the atmosphere, in some places it worked, in
some places it didn't, all in all, a pretty average slasher soundtrack.
BOTTOM LINE
While far from as good as the original Urban Legend, this is still way too
underrated. I thought it was a pretty bad slasher indeed but there's just
so many crap slashers out there that you can't give this just one star.
I think this is worth checking out if you like teenage slasher movies as
much as I do, but for the more narrow-minded audience, this is probably
something that you will shut off after the very cheesy opening scene.
