PHONE

PLOT
A woman is terrorised by weird phone calls on her cell phone and
realises that her phone number might be haunted... As she digs
deeper into the secrets that her phone number holds she starts
finding out about gruesome things that she will wish that she never
found out about.
REVIEW
To begin with this movie is a roller coaster ride of originality and
rip-offs... Let's begin with the good things, the movie plays
along great and is scary and has a great atmosphere throughout the
whole movie, as in most Japanese horror films these days. There are
very few flaws and there are also a few jumps, the effects are done
remarkably well as well. The directing is brilliant and the director
gives us a lot of interesting camera angles and quite an original
directing overall. The acting is also close to perfect, I was
especially impressed by the one playing the little girl, wow, now
that's a great forthcoming actress. Oh and I have to say that the
ending in this movie is just as brilliant as the ending in Ringu.
Now to the bad things, to begin with, it steals a lot of stuff from
other Asian horror movies, to name a few: Kaïro, Ringu, Dark Water.
As a slasherfan I can overlook unoriginality but I cannot overlook
an overuse of ringing, because oh my god, I thought the phone would
just never stop, I can see where the movie got its title from.
Another thing that this movie fails at is to keep the viewer focused,
don't get me wrong, it is a great movie, but it is really confusing
as well, there was just too much going on. SPOILERS AHEAD: I still don't
know what the serial killer had to do with the movie? He was just
put in for like 5 minutes for absolutely no reason at all. END OF
SPOILERS.
I was kind of surprised when I noticed that they didn't use more
scary mirror scenes, cause everyone loves the ghost in the mirror
right? Makes me wonder why those big mirrors were in the corridor,
from the first time I saw them I was sure something scary was going
to reflect in them at some point in the movie, but oh well, I guess
maybe I'm the only one who still likes mirrors... Overall, this is
a great film, but with lack of originality and with a lot of un-
necessary and confusing scenes I will have to give this movie four
out of five stars.
GORE
A corpse, some blood shedding and some spit up blood, I think the
money went for the computer graphics in this movie and not for the
gore graphics, unfortunately according to me. But most Asian movies
these days don't include much gore, which is quite surprising if
you look back a couple of years when everything made in Japan was
gory and brutal.
SOUNDTRACK
The soundtrack was a complete Ringu rip-off as well, eerie weird
music plays through most of the movie, except for when the phone is
ringing or Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata is playing.
BOTTOM LINE
I don't think this is available for order on the net yet, but it should
be anytime soon. I suggest you save your bucks and get this puppy
instead of renting another American Scream rip-off, or perhaps instead
of throwing out money on the ridiculous Ring remake, I bet you that
this movie will get an American remake as well, perhaps this will be
the American The Ring 2?
