KOLOBOS

PLOT
Five people, a secluded resort, gruesome murder. These are the
three ingredients for this slasher. When five people enter a
house in the middle of nowhere to star in some TV show, they are
about to get a nasty surprise. When the five persons get trapped
inside the house, with no exit in sight, the fact that a madman
is on a killing spree in the house doesn't exactly help. While
they have to fight to survive the night, Kyra also has to fight
her own ghosts.
REVIEW
Kolobos isn't what you would call the regular teen slasher. This
was actually the first webcam/reality-TV show horrormovie in
this new reality-TV horrormovie wave. While many movies had almost
the exact same plot (Voyeur.Com, Halloween 8, Hell Asylum), the
cinema movie My Little Eye must've been the one that copied it the
most. So, what I don't understand is, why didn't this get onto
the big screen? It looks as high budget as the other slashers that
ruled the big screen back in those days, so why did this just get
a DTV release? This is a very good and not to talk about gory
slasher, which I hold dear.
All the actors and actresses are quite talented except for the girl
playing the part of Kyra, the person I think we were supposed to
root for. Amy Weber (Kyra) is another one of those many, many
actors that have made their way into horrorfilms from previously
starring in MTV's Undressed. The directing is handled perfectly
and everything looks really good. This does not look like a DTV
movie at all and you might be surprised of how good it actually
looks. Another surprise is that both directors, Daniel Liatowitsch
and David Todd Ocvirk have not made a single full length movie
before this, and not after either... Why?
Kolobos has to be one of my favourite films of 1999, and that was
indeed a very good year for horrormovies. This also had many
clever dialogues and comments and you get a few laughs out of it
aswell. The movies that they watch, called Slaughterhouse Factor
look extremely entertaining, and I just wish that they would be
proper movies cause let's face it, you can't beat a sentence like
'She's got a fork in her neck!'. There are a few flaws and plot
holes here and there, but they are easy to overlook. I don't know
if anyone else noticed this, but when Kyra's in the hospital she's
got contact lenses in her eyes, I mean, shouldn't they remove
those before the operation? Well, anyway, I did love this film
and I've already watched it thrice so I think it's safe to say
that this movie is as good as it gets the first time and doesn't
get better the second or the third time you watch it.
GORE
Where to begin, where to begin... Well, let's start with the gore
scenes from the abysmal Slaughterhouse Factor movies. There we get
an axe in the chest and a fork in the neck. Now to the movie
itself. We get a bashed-in head, a very gory broken leg, a severed
head, guts running out, a very gory eye impaling scene, some nasty
and gory melting skin, some self-mutilation and a cut up face.
This is one for the gore fans.
SOUNDTRACK
I really dug the soundtrack, it helped the movie to become what
it was. We get some angelic voices along with some Halloween
inspired music. Some dark and eerie piano music. Some techno
music, and at last, some very weird pop music.
BOTTOM LINE
This is a brilliant slasher and was the first reality-TV horror
movie to get made. There's plenty of gore for everyone and the
soundtrack is just astounding. The directing looks good and uses
a lot of interesting elements to keep the movie going. The acting
is far from flawless but it's still a lot better than the average
DTV acting that we get these days. All I can say is that you
shouldn't judge this by its awful cover, this is a very well made
film and I'll probably watch it again, so I suggest you do too.
