ISLAND OF DEATH

PLOT
A couple travels to a Greek island for the winter and rent a house.
The couple seems nice and the islanders treat them well, only to
realise that these two persons are quite hostile. Christopher and
Celia soon starts killing people who sin and if that wasn't already
enough, they also take pictures of it.

REVIEW
Ok, I know that you're not supposed to swear in a review but I figured
it didn't matter as this is certainly nothing for anyone below 18
years of age anyway so let me begin by saying that this was one
fucked up flick. I didn't know much about the movie before I sat
down to watch it except that it was an exploitation kind of movie
from the 70's that have been banned for ages so obviously I thought
that we were supposed to root for the couple, but on second thought...
maybe not. I have no idea what I just watched, it was just weird and
sick and disturbing and... quite spectacular actually.

The directing is just awesome. It's simple but very creative. I love
how the scenes change with camera sound as if someone was taking
pictures, it isn't anything advanced, but it's just so cool. None
of these actors made it big after this movie, big surprise? I don't
think so. While these are all quite good actors, this is the kind
of movie that prevents people from becoming famous. I think that
Jane Ryall (playing Celia) might have actually made it big if she
didn't star in this movie as she is a good actress.

I still don't know whether I liked this movie or not. I certainly
wouldn't call it horror, but there was something about this movie
that I really liked but I can't quite put my fingers on it. oh,
and it was not all the stupid sex scenes that extended the movies
running time with about half an hour and still managing not to show
anything very graphical. This is what I call a real cult movie,
this would never have been made today except for maybe from some
low budget company, but still, it wouldn't have looked as good as
this did. I would have to say that I liked it, in a perverted kind
of way, but it's nothing you want to watch with your partner.

GORE
I was surprised that there wasn't a lot of gore in this. One gets
nails impaled through the hands, one gets a sickle through the
stomach and one gets the brains blown out with a gun, but there's
nothing really worth mentioning at all here, it's still quite
disturbing so you don't really need the gore.

SOUNDTRACK
Basically the soundtrack consists of different kinds of drums and
I really liked that so a big plus there. We also get some Greek
sounding music with lyrics in English? And some piano music which
also has a Greek feeling to it.

BOTTOM LINE
A movie like this could only have come from the heart of Europe.
It's a disturbing and sleazy movie which blew my brains out.
This reminded me a lot of the French movie La Bête that was
released the same year (1975). This is not a film for everyone
but if you know that you can handle it and if you like sleazy
films like 'I Spit On Your Grave', this is a must for you.
