HARDCORE
POISONED EYES

PLOT
Sarah, Angelique and Ellie go to Angelique's deceased grandfathers cabin in
the cold snowy nowhere for a boozfilled night of fun. As Angelique has gone
there for personal matters to find out what killed her grandfather since he
dedicated his life to learning about satanic cults, the two others are unknowing
of why they are really up there, but as soon as they find out, Sarah gets an
idea, she thinks it would be fun to phone up the head of the satanic cult that
had been hanging out, not many years ago, close to the cabin. But what started
out as a joke, ended in a night of terror.
REVIEW
As you can hear, the plot is very original and I have to say that this is
one of the scariest movies I have ever seen. But, not only is this movie very
scary and suspenseful, it's also very powerful emotionally. It borrows a few
elements, not intentionally though I think, from The Blair Witch Project, but
where BWP failed, this succeeds big time. If this movie would have had a higher
budget, this would probably have gotten a cinema release but instead, we don't
even get a proper US DVD release, only one that you have to buy over the net.
The acting is brilliant from all three actresses, we laugh hard with them and
we get to feel for them. But let's not forget that they have gotten brilliant
dialogues aswell, even though the movie was only shot in 11 days, the script
must have been very though out. The directing is so and so, the outdoors scenes
feel, as I said earlier on, a bit like The Blair Witch Project, while the
indoors scenes look totally good. There is one thing that the director fails
on though... the use of light in the forest scenes, its so god damn dark that
we don't have a clue of what's going on. If I would have been able to see what
actually happened in the forest, I would probably have given this my full
rating, but since the forest scenes are very long you miss out on a lot and
therefore I can only give this four stars.
Hardcore Poisoned Eyes is probably not the best title they could have come
up with, I think that a title like 'Shadows In The Snow' or 'Terrified' would
have been more suitable as I still don't understand more than the first word
from the title, which is explained in the movie. I am really looking forward
to Sal Ciavarello's next horrormovie, I have a lot of faith in this new
director. Perhaps someday we will get a proper high budget remake of this
masterpiece, god knows it deserves one.
GORE
HPE isn't very gory even though it does have it's gory moments, too bad that
it's too dark to be able to see them. From what I could see we got a knife
in one's throat, and someone gets an axe in the head, oh and I'm pretty sure
that, that was a bloody heart in the snow. If I'm wrong or missed something,
please give me an email so I can correct this.
SOUNDTRACK
Even though we don't get any real treats in this section, it does work very
well for the movie, with some drum beating low in the bass department while
a dark scary layer creates the atmosphere. We also get a rock tune, even though
it's not played very loud, I'm happy that I got it. Oh and as usual we get
some piano music aswell, but that's really nothing very special.
BOTTOM LINE
One of the best movies ever made in my opinion, it's a shame that much of it
is to dark to be able to tell what's going on. Other than that, this is a
great, scary, original horrormovie. Although, I have the UK DVD and on the
front it says Full Uncut version, but let me just ask, what in this movie
can you cut? There's hardly any gore at all, this was a dumb misstep that the
company that released it made as it now focuses on the wrong audience, making
people think that this is gory. People who enjoy good ghost movies will
probably enjoy this movie just as much as I did. Remember, the budget is low,
and you can tell that very well, but if you get 10 minutes into the movie,
you're already so fascinated that you have forgotten about the budget thing.
