GHOST
SHIP

PLOT
A salvage crew goes out into the middle of the ocean to explore
an unidentified ship that has been discovered recently. The
ship seems to be in almost perfect condition, and it looks as
if it's going to be a piece of cake bringing it into the shore.
But what the salvage crew doesn't know is that, when the ship
disappeared mysteriously approximately 40 years ago, everyone
on the ship died in a terrible accident and are now back to
seek revenge on everyone who tries to take over the ship.
REVIEW
Original? Not at all! This rips off... oh about a 100 horror
movies or more, to take some examples: Hellraiser, Death Ship,
The Triangle, Lost Voyage, Cube, 13 Ghosts, House On Haunted Hill. Having a hard
time seeing the resemblances of the movies? Let me help you
then, first off is Hellraiser, I was mostly thinking of the
scene where the giant swimming pool sucks in the woman’s blood
into a hole. Death Ship, well, it's basically the same story,
and not to mention, Ghost Ship rips off Death Ship's poster
completely, hoping not many people have seen Death Ship.
The Triangle... well, in the end of this movie it kind of
felt as a highbudget version of The Triangle, the same goes
for Lost Voyage which also has an almost identical plot.
I brought Cube in since the very cool, but still very un-
original, opening scene has the gore effect, which Cube was
first to use, then Resident Evil used it, and then 13 Ghosts
used it, and now it just feels kind of old instead of cool.
Ghost Ship also had many things in common with the 1999 Dark
Castle remake of House On Haunted Hill, you can tell that
it's the same guys behind these two movies as there are many
effects (for example the blood in the roof effect) that are
used in both films.
Desmond Harrington is surprisingly the worst of all of these
quite experienced actors. While making an awesome performance
in the British psychological horrorthriller 'The Hole', he
doesn't come out very realistic as a person in this movie
and he makes this movie feel even more fake than it already
is. The only ones who do an average job in this movie are
Julianna Margulies, playing Maureen, and Gabriel Byrne,
playing Murphy. The directing is average but you could tell
that they would have expected to cash in some more on this
than they actually did. I guess ripping off unknown horror-
movies and call it your own isn't they way to go after all.
Why spend so much money making such a rubbish film? I know,
the movie does have its moments but there are just so many
flaws and mistakes that I almost want to kill myself just
thinking about it. Inexperienced writer Mark Hanlon will
obviously not have his big breakthrough for quite a while
after making a movie this bad. The only reason why this
went to cinemas instead of DTV was because it was made by
Dark Castle and Warner Brothers but to tell you the truth,
anyone could have made this up, it just doesn't feel very
interesting at all and ends up as an uninspired, unoriginal
and very predictable ghost movie that we all feel as we
have seen so many times before.
GORE
People praise this for being such a gory film... Did I miss
out on something? There's only one good gore scene. What
we get is basically some sticks through ones stomach, some
people cut in half, some half rotten corpses, a gory gunshot
in the stomach and a quite gory hook in the face scene.
SOUNDTRACK
Although, the brilliant, atmospheric, Italian music played
in the opening is really good, the rest of the soundtrack
is quite uninteresting, with a soundtrack that you would
find in any new lowbudget horrormovie. Some rock here and
there, some strings and some piano, nothing out of the ordinary.
BOTTOM LINE
A movie that could go nothing but wrong. This movie was
doomed from the day that it started producing. There's really
nothing original about the movie at all and you end up
feeling that you've watched this before... Well, in my
case I had watched this once before, only that it was a
very dark screener so you couldn't really tell what was going
on in the movie and to tell you the truth, I liked it better
when I couldn't see what was going on. If you're desperate
for a haunted ship flick, I guess this is the one to go for,
but personally, I liked The Lost Voyage better, despite
the lower budget.
