FLASHBACK

PLOT
Jeanette's parents were brutally killed when she was a child. For ten
years she has been in a mental institute, and now it's time for her to
go out and explore the world. She gets sent off to a resort in the
mountains to practice her French with some students. But someone from
her past has followed her, someone who doesn't want Jeanette to forget
about her past, someone with murder on the mind.

REVIEW
This is the finest slasher to come out of Germany ever. Even better than
The Pool, which in my opinion was also a great slasher. Flashback is quite
similar to Cherry Falls, only a lot better. I just found out that this is
getting a US release in march so I had to watch it again, for the forth
time. Unfortunately, the US release won't be completely uncut. Neither is
the German DVD release, but in Germany you should be able to track down
a rental DVD which is completely uncut, and that I did.

Michael Karen does a great job on directing this movie and the shots of
the mountains and the waterfall are simply beautiful. The acting is also
good, having an experienced cast you should expect so aswell. Can't say
much more about that part, but the acting is above average for teenage
slashermovies, that's for sure.

Flashback doesn't try to be a very serious slasher, as it throws in a
couple of humorous scenes that you can't help laughing at. What did
bug me though was that there was not only a high bodycount... but there
was also a high animalcount! Three dead pets for crying out loud! That's
not something that you see to often. Still, this is definitely the best
slasher to come out from Germany, too bad the sucky movie Anatomy stole
it's wind completely.

GORE
I can't tell you how much gore the US DVD will have as I saw the uncut
edition, which won't be released in the US, but I think it's about the
same, just that the uncut edition had some extended gore scenes. Let's
see now, we get a few slit throats, which are very gory and graphical,
some dismembered hands, one gets a hayfork through the stomach, one gets
the tongue bit out, one gets a sickle in the crotch, someone gets a
sickle through the head and finally someone gets a sickle in the stomach.
Oh and now for the animalcount, we get a dog sliced in half, very gory
and graphic, we get a cat thrown in the mixer, and we get a dog whose
stomach is opened widely enough so you can see the spine.

SOUNDTRACK
Nothing special here. Some modified popversion of a halloween soundy tune
to build up the suspense. A happy whistle tune, a lot of pop and techno-
pop music, and last but not least we get a rock tune.

BOTTOM LINE
Best slasher to come out of Germany ever, I was torn between giving this
four stars and five stars, but, well, I felt generous. I guess it kind
of loses some suspense after the forth time you watch it. Getting a US
DVD release by Lions Gate in March, be sure to grab a copy, whether you
like Cherry Falls or not, you're gonna love this!
