DEEP IN THE WOODS

PLOT
A group consisting of five young actors and actresses are going on
a trip to the country to set up a play of Little Red Riding Hood.
From the first moment they step into the big house they sense that
something isn't right, the play that they are getting lots of money
for to set up is only going to be viewed by the old man owning the
house and his son, Nicholas. When the old man disappears, it seems

as if the cast of the play is going to get shorter by the minute for
a cold-blooded murder in a wolf mask has just gotten a taste for blood.

REVIEW
You can tell almost immediately that this movie didn't have a low
production budget. The atmosphere is beautiful and the contrast is
so smooth and powerful. This is an average teenage slasher yes, but
as many of you know, foreign slashers are often better than American,
and this French movie follows that rule perfectly. The acting is way
above average from all actors except Clotilde Courau who laughs at
the most inappropriate times, and not even with a very believable
laughter.

Lionel Delplanque makes a brilliant long film debut with this movie,
as I said before, the colours are used almost unbelievably good, and
he uses a lot of interesting angles. The best of all scenes has to be
the atmospheric shot of the lake in front of the house in the middle
of the lake, if you've seen this movie you know what I mean. The shots
of a crow flying in the sky are also very well directed.

Even if this movie sounds to unknown for you to want to watch, you should
know that it went on cinemas in almost all of Europe and in the few
countries that it didn't get a cinema release, it went onto DVD and
rental Video. The fact is that this even got a cinema premiere in USA,
although a very limited one, only 29 screens in all of the country and
made a total gross of approximately $60,000. Quite honestly I thought
that was a bit weak as I would have loved to see this on the big screen...
Unfortunately for me, this movie only made it onto rental video here in Sweden.

I see that someone calls this the French answer to Scream, what
the hell? Just because it's a slasher doesn't mean that it has to be
connected to the utterly bad movie Scream! In fact, this has very few
things in common with Scream comparing to other slashers that was
released in the 1996-2001 slasherwave. I think that anyone who can take
a movie for what it is and enjoy a slasher now and then should give this
a try... but have an open mind, I seem to be the only one who thought
this was good, oh and by the way, it took me three times to watch this
before I liked it, first time I was kind of disappointed.

GORE
Mostly blood splatter, a guy gets a fork jammed into the hand, another one
gets an arrow through the stomach while one gets acid poured in the face.
There are a few other gore scenes as well but I don't want to spoil those
scenes for you as I thought they were quite cool and original, not to
talk about unexpected.

SOUNDTRACK
Promenons-Nous Dans Le Bois as it's originally titled, has to have the
bets soundtrack I have ever heard in a slashermovie. First we get a nice
drum'n bass track, although it would have been nice if it would have lasted
a little longer. Then we get some slow rock pop music in a scene but other
than that it's just scary atmospheric layers that fills the movie.

BOTTOM LINE
This movie was totally entertaining but don't expect too much, you never
should expect anything from a slasher in my opinion. If you watch this a
few times and with an open mind you might end up liking it as much as I
did, but on the other hand, you might just ruin a few hours of your life.
