DARKNESS
FALLS

PLOT
In the small city of Darkness Falls, a terrible secret has been
buried for many years, only to surface many years later. When
Kyle was a kid, his mother was killed by the tooth fairy and he
was sent off to a mental hospital. Now, about a 20 years later,
Kyle has returned to Darkness Falls in order to help his child-
hood love Caitlin to save her son from being taken by the tooth-
fairy. Not everyone is as happy to see Kyle as Caitlin is and
when everyone's against Kyle, it's not very easy to stay out of
the darkness...
REVIEW
Stay out of the what now? Light? Oh no, that's right, you must
stay out of the darkness, we heard that about a million times in
this movie and honestly, it gets tiresome. People make out this
to be one of the worst horrormovies of the century... why? Because
people got their hopes up, just as for Fear Dot com (well, that
was really bad though). Well, I watched this movie with an open
mind since I had read so much negative stuff about it. Well, since
I seem to be the only one who enjoyed "Wes Craven's They", I guess
it's no surprise that I liked this one since basically, it is the
same movie. People also don't seem to like the fact that all horror-
movies that come to the big screen these days are rated PG-13. Well,
tough luck, ofcourse I prefer my movies with a bit of gore in them,
but as long as I do get horrormovies at cinemas at all, I'm more
than satisfied. This felt more like a slasher than a supernatural
thriller though, I mean, the tooth fairy was wearing a white mask
and did look like Michael Myers. It seems as if the Hollywood directors
must've noticed the incredibly good feedback there has been for all
those Asian ghost movies and decided to start making their own
ghost horrormovies (which always seem to involve a little boy?).
The acting is good like, but it could've been a whole lot better.
I was disappointed to see that Emily Browning only appeared in the
opening scene (even if that's understandable since she's supposed
to be looking 20 years older during the rest of the movie), but
Emily is indeed a very good actress and I think we have a new star
coming up, she's only 14 and already been in two big horrormovies.
The directing is good but Jonathan Liebesman overuses the darkness
in this movie, it's like he didn't want the audience to be able to
calm down for one second, just scares after scares after scares, hell
we even get a black cat running over the hood of a car, by the way,
I'm sure I can't be the only one who asked myself how the hell that
cat got up on the car hood.
While not being a totally satisfying movie, it's still a whole lot
better than people make it out to be. People should stop getting all
worked up over horrormovies they barely know anything about, which
I think will also be the case for movies like 'House Of 1000 Corpses',
'Freddy vs. Jason' and 'House Of The Dead'. I took this for what it
was, an average horrormovie that knew that it wasn't all that great
so that it had to use all kinds of cheap tricks to scare the audience.
If the whole movie would have continued like the opening, perhaps this
would even have gotten five stars (the opening is really creepy). But
since it basically was the same things happening over and over again
in this movie, not too talk about the fact that the movie only was 75
minutes or something, I can only give this three stars.
GORE
Bambi was gorier.
SOUNDTRACK
Uses the same score as most horrormovies these days. Some random, non
famous rock tunes, and some eerie music to set the atmosphere. Oh,
and all the moaning noises from that ugly tooth fairy thing.
BOTTOM LINE
Why a town would get a name like 'Darkness Falls' beats me, but despite
plot holes and unoriginality, this didn't live up to all those negative
reviews that have been popping up on the net lately. I thought this
was a descent horrormovie in the vein of "They" and I think that it
deserves a chance from everyone, just don't get your expectations for
this movie too high. If you really hated They, then don't bother watching
this as it's basically the same movie, mixed with elements from The
Sixth Sense and The Ring.
