| REVENGE OF THE BOGEYMAN. | |
| AKA: Revenge of the Boogeyman, Bogeyman 2, Boogeymen 2. | |
Suzanne Love, Ron
James and John Carradine reprise their roles in this
sequel to "The Bogeyman", this time directed by
Bruce Starr, with unaccredited work by original director
Uli Lommel. Set 6 months on from the original, Suzanne
Love has moved to LA but the broken shard of glass
containing the evil from the first film continues to
cause mayhem.
Co-director Lommel turns up as one of the
cast playing a Hollywood director that wants to make a
film about the events of the first film, but ends up as
one of the Bogeyman's victims along with his production
team and cast. Most of the film is made up of footage
from the first, which is probably why it was included on
the DPP's list. |
|
| Other Information. Removed from the DPP's list and not prosecuted. The film was previously available fully uncut on Dutch video. The film was passed uncut in the UK in 2004 HOWEVER, this is a totally different, re-edited version. This release, touted as being the "Director's Cut", has even MORE stock footage from the previous film edited into it, has new shot-on-video inserts with none of original scenes that were filmed for the original Bogeyman 2 and has a different soundtrack score. |

| SHOGUN ASSASSIN. | |
| AKA: Kosure Ookami-Sanzu no Kawa no Ubagurama, Kozure Ohkmi n2. | |
This is actually 2 films from the
Japanese "Lone Wolf" series ("Baby
Cart at River Styxx" and "Sword of
Vengance") edited together and overdubbed in
English for the American market. The plot revolves around
a Japanese warrior, who goes on a quest for revenge after
his wife is murdered.
Lots of martial arts fighting with Samurai swords takes place with heads, limbs and various
body parts flying everywhere and blood spraying into the
camera, whilst the young son of our hero looks on from
the safety of his wooden pram. Quite good if you like
tacky martial arts films. |
|
| Other Information. Re-released by Vipco after apparently 2s of BBFC cuts for a video release, in addition to the 2s of cuts already removed from the cinema release. Vipco apparently got the full uncut version passed in 2000, however there is some dispute as to whether this is actually the full uncut version or the cinema version. Vipco had previously distributed the fully uncut version in Denmark. |

| THE SLAYER. | |
4 people holidaying on an island of the coast of Georgia
are attacked by an unseen killer, summoned up from the imagination of
one of the holidaymakers. A sort of cross between the Id creature from
"Forbidden Planet" and Freddy Kruger from "Elm Street".
Some of the gorier moments include a fisherman having his
scalp whacked off with an oar and a woman having a pitch fork shoved
through her back which exits through her breasts. |
|
| Other Information. Re-released in the early 90's after 14s of BBFC cuts onto the "Vipco" label. The full uncut version was eventually passed in 2001. Vipco had previously also released the uncut print in Denmark. |

| SNUFF. | |
| AKA: The Slaughter, American Cannibal, Big Snuff. | |
Do not be deceived by the films title, or
the rumours surrounding its release. This is NOT an
actual snuff film. This originally started life as a low
budget South American flick entitled "The
Slaughter" about a Manson style gang of cycle sluts
lead by a chap called Sa-Tan, who go around killing
people.
This film did a brief tour of South America then sat on the shelf for many years before being snapped up by a New York distributor who tagged on an additional 5 minute ending. At the end of the film we see the film crew on one the sets, who then grab an unfortunate actress and proceed to cut off her plastic fingers and pull offal from under her T-shirt. Despite the relatively
unconvincing effects this movie is still believed by many
to be a genuine snuff film to this day and was another
one of the movies responsible for starting the Nasties
furore. The video case bears no indication of who the
distributor might be, although it is widely believed that
it was released by Astra video. |
|
| Other Information. Finally passed uncut for a UK release in 2003 surprisingly, although this has yet to materialise. The uncut version was also released onto a limited edition DVD in the US by Anchor Bay. |

| SS EXPERIMENT CAMP. | |
| AKA: SS Experiment Love Camp, Lager SS adis kastrat kommandantur, Horreur Nazis, Les champs des filles perdues, Captive Women II: Orgies of the Damned. | |
If you were
expecting to see a film based on cruel Nazi Experiments
on unwilling POW's, you're in for a disappointment. This
one of the many sleazy WW2 Nazi camp movies trying to
cash in on the success of "Salon Kitty", and
"The Night Porter" and plays more like a black
comedy.
The poor female POW's get raped and groped by all
and sundry at the camp, but in an amusing comic twist the
commandant decides he wants a new pair of testicles and
so removes them from one of the hunky guards, who doesen't seem to realise until he goes to bonk one of the
French prisoners. This provides one of the most amusing
scenes when he confronts the commandant and says
"You Bastard. what have you done with my
Balls?". |
|
| Other Information. The film was, surprisingly, passed uncut in the UK in 2005. An uncut US DVD is also available from 'Shriek Show'. |

| TENEBRAE. | |
| AKA: Tenebre, Unsane, Shadow, Sotto Gli Occhi del Assasino. | |
|
The poor author is then bombarded
with threats and sent pictures from the murders, which
include axeings, stabbings, garrotings and razor
slashings. Horror veteran John Saxon also stars. |
|
| Other Information. The banned video was actually the edited cinema version which had 4 seconds of cuts. Subsequent UK releases from the late 80's and 90's were missing 5s of cuts. Anchor Bay UK finally managed to get the uncut print passed in 2003, although this was apparently missing a 1s cut of gore to the axe murder scene and shortened a dialogue scene due to print damage as was their US DVD. SEE MAIN REVIEW. |

| TERROR EYE'S. | |
| AKA: Night School. | |
A lacklustre slasher pic about a murderer
stalking the pupils of a Boston college (fortunately this
is in Massachusetts in the USA not Boston, Lincolnshire
in England where I live). The Murderer, who wears motor
bike leathers and a crash helmet, goes around
decapitating people and depositing their heads in buckets,
ditches, toilets and in a pot full of stew!
Its hard to
believe that this film was by British director Kenneth
Hughes, who also did "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang".
British actress Rachael Ward, Meg from "The
Thorn Birds", stars in one of the lead roles along with
Italian B-movie actor Leonard Mann (Cut & Run). |
|
| Other Information. Re-relesead after 1:16s of BBFC cuts by Guild Home video. An R rated video is also available in the US under the title "Night School". |

| THE TOOLBOX MURDERS. | |
Supposedly based on
a true story (don't believe it) about a Ski masked
psychopath, who goes around killing the female
inhabitants of an apartment block that he believes need a
lesson in morality. A variety of different hand and power
tools are used in the murders, including a hammer,
screwdriver, nailgun and portable drill.
There's some
fairly gory moments, but nothing that die hard horror
fans can't handle, but the plot is rather dull so you
might have a hard time sitting through it. The killer was
played by the same guy who played Buck in "The High Chapperal". Also look out for porn star Kelly
Nichols, as well as Anita Corseut from "The
Blob". This film was remade in 2003 by Tobe Hooper. |
|
| Other Information. Removed from the DPP's list. The film was eventually re-issued in 2000, after 1M:46s of BBFC cuts onto the "Vipco" label, who also distributed the uncut version in Denmark. An uncut US DVD is also available. |

| UNHINGED. | |
Three young girls crash their car in the Oregon woodlands
whilst on the way to a rock concert. They seek refuge in a Victorian
mansion house, inhabited by a demented old lady and her middle aged
daughter, and find themselves cut off from the outside world.
They then fall prey to the demented family and get axed,
shot and hacked to death in an ending that try's to be like "Texas
Chainsaw Massacre" but fails miserably, along with the rest of the film. |
|
| Other Information. This film was notable is it featured on the BBC news when they were doing a report about uncensored horror videos at the time. The film had actually already been passed with an "X" certificate for a cinema release after cuts and was later removed from the DPP's list and not prosecuted. The film was eventually passed fully uncut in 2005. An uncut US DVD is also available. |

| VISITING HOURS. | |
| AKA: The Fright, Get Well Soon, Terreur à l'hôpital central. | |
Screen baddie Micheal Ironside,
along with Lee Grant and Star Trek's William Shatner star
in this Canadian filmed slasher pic about a psychopath
(Ironside) who stalks around the hospital, beating up girls, stabbing
nurses and switching off life support machines.
He is eventually stopped by getting acid thrown in his face by would-be-victim Grant. |
|
| Other Information. Passed for a cinema release with an "X" certificate after cuts. The cut cinema version was then re-released with an 18 certificate on the CBS/FOX video label, which is currently OOP. ITV actually showed the full uncut version on terrestrial TV and got a slap on the wrists by the ITC for it. Available uncut on US DVD from Anchor Bay. |

| WEREWOLF AND THE YETI, THE. | |
| AKA: La Maldiconde la Bestia, Night of the Howling Beast, Hall of the Mountain King, Horror of the Werewolf. | |
The film is more
abominable than the actually yeti, in this peculiar tale
of a group of Sherpas that encounter a couple of vampire
lover bimbo's, then get captured by by a load of Tartar
roughnecks, before one of them turns into a werewolf and
ends up fighting with a yeti over the girl in the group.
Directed by Miguel Bonns, this was actually the eighth
film in a series of features about wolfman Waldemar
Danisky, played by Spanish horror star Paul Naschy. This
films inclusion was probably because of the tartar leader
who enjoys skinning young girls alive. |
|
| Other Information. Still banned in the UK. An uncut version was released in Holland by "Sunrise" tapes which is currently OOP. The film has yet to materialise on DVD. |
|
| THE WITCH WHO CAME FROM THE SEA. | |
Directed by Matt
Climber (Matteo Ottaviano) who was once married to Jayne
Mansfield, and scripted by Robert Thom, who also wrote
the cult movie "Wild in the streets". The film
is supposedly based partly on the real life events of
Thom's wife Millie Perkins, who also stars in the lead
role.
Perkins plays a barmaid, who having been sexually
abused by her father, goes around seducing her male
customers then castrating them with a razor, although
these scenes where heavily toned down. The film got
itself noticed because of the text on the video sleeve
which said "A young women's nightmares of incest and
castration...molly has a way with razors". |
|
| Other Information. The film was eventually removed from the DPP list and not prosecuted. The film was passed uncut for a UK release in 2006, but so far has only been released in a box set with other former "Video nasty" titles from Anchor Bay UK. An uncut DVD was released in the US in 2004. |

| WOMEN BEHIND BARS. | |
| AKA: Des Diamants pour L'Enfer, Visa pour Mourir, Prison Sado pour Femmes, Punition Cell, Caged Women, Femmes en cage, Frauengefangnis 3. | |
Linda Romay, who in
reality is the wife of the director Jess Franco, murders
her husband so she can steal his hoard of diamonds, but
gets banged up inside a Central American prison
instead. She is then subjected to various forms of
nastiness at the hands of the guards and the sadistic
warden including being hung naked, whipped and given
electric shocks to her breasts.
Director Franco even
turns up at the end of the film and shoots the evil
warden when Romay manages to escape. Lots of gratuitous
nudity, along with the aforementioned sadistic prison
treatment got this one noticed by the DPP although its
more rubbish than nasty. |
|
| Other Information. Removed from the DPP list but never re-issued. X-rated of Germany have released an uncut special edition DVD under the title "Women Behind Bars 3/Frauengefangnis 3". Be wary of another film under the title "Women Behind Bars/Frauengefangnis 2" which is actually the film "Jailhouse Wardress". |

| XTRO. | |
| AKA: Monstromo, Judas Goat. | |
British made Sci-Fi
shocker starring Philip Sayer who's abducted by aliens,
physically altered then returned to earth 3 years later.
A 4-legged crab like alien attacks a blonde haired girl and Sayer explodes from her womb fully grown as his former
self, the next day. He then decides to look up his old
family and turns his son and ex-wife into aliens and the
poor au-pair into an alien egg maker (EH?).
As you've
probably gathered this is a very disjointed tale,
particularly as the aliens can manifest physical objects
from out of nowhere. Looking somewhat cheap and tacky, this low
budget film also appears unintentionally funny in places,
particularly when the young son manifests a life size
Action Man figure who then chases the nosey old lady
downstairs around her flat (played by former
"Eastenders" actress Anna Wing). The film has
spawned 2 unrelated sequels. |
|
| Other Information. Re-released without cuts. Please note that the theatrical version had a different ending to the one released on video, which has also been shown on the UK sci-fi channel in 2002. The current US and UK DVDs are uncut in terms of gore, but strangely miss out a couple of dialogue scenes, producing a couple of nasty jump cuts, yet these are intact in the old video releases and the TV version. | ZOMBIE CREEPING FLESH. | |
| AKA: Inferno del morti viventi, Virus, Apocalypsis Canibal, Hell of the Living Dead, Night of the Zombies, Cannibal Virus, Virus, Zombie of the Savanna. | |
An explosion at a
remote chemical plant turns the workers into murderous
zombies, who then proceed to munch on the people living
in the nearby villages. A commando team is sent in to
sort out the ensuing mess, but end up becoming the
zombies next meal.
The version released on video was
already cut in places, most notably where the heroine Margrit Evelyn Newton gets her eyeballs pulled out through
her mouth, but it still got included in the DPP's hit
list. A film that really deserves to be seen in it's full
uncut form, it is highly enjoyable on a trash level due
to it's awful acting and naff plot lines. The soundtrack
by "The Goblins" was ripped off directly from
"Dawn of the Dead" and "Contamination". |
|
| Other Information. A heavily cut version was prepared but never submitted for classification. Vipco managed to get the full uncut version passed for a UK release in 2002. The film is also available uncut on US DVD as "Hell of the Living Dead". |

| ZOMBIE FLESH EATERS. | |
| AKA: Zombie, Zombie 2, Zombies 2, Island of the Living Dead, Island of the Flesh-Eaters, Gli Ultimi Zombie, L'enfer Des Zombies, Woodoo, Sanguelia. | |
Lucio Fulci's
Unofficial follow up to George Romero's "Dawn of the
Dead", which had been released as "Zombie"
in Italy and hence why this film is called "Zombie
2" in that country. Tisa Farrow (sister of Mia), Ian
McCollough, Al Cliver and Aurietta Gay set sail for the
Caribbean island of Matool looking for Farrows father, who happens to be
a medical missionary.
They are then chased around the island by a bunch of cheesy
looking, very slow moving zombies who've been risen by the natives
voodoo magic. They are aided by the last remaining medical missionary
Richard Johnson, who's been trying to find a logical reason for why the
dead are rising from their graves. |
|
| Other Information. Heavily censored for its initial UK cinema release, missing 1:41s, Vipco then had the bright idea of releasing the strong uncut version on video, but following the introduction of the VRA this was replaced with the BBFC approved cut cinema version. Vipco have also released the "strong uncut version" throughout Europe, and is also available uncut on US DVD on various labels under both "Zombie" and "Zombi 2" names (not to be confused with Dawn of the Dead which is also known as Zombie in some European territories) There's also an uncut German DVD from 'Dragon' under the title "Woodoo". and a Dutch release by 'Italian Shock' as "Zombi 2" The film was re-submitted to the BBFC in 1999 in a more complete form and was passed with only the famous "eye gouging sequence" and subsequent "gut munching scene" edited. Anchor Bay managed to get the full uncut version passed in 2005, but this was only available in a special "box set" with several other former video nasties. SEE MAIN REVIEW |

There is an excellent book entitled "Video Nasties", from the publishers of "Dark Side Magazine". This reviews each of these 74 films in detail and contains full size colour reproductions of each video sleeve on the list. |
![]() |
"Video Nasties 2" takes a look at many other pre-VRA titles that were likely candidates for the list, but managed to escape inclusion. Again the book provides full size repro cover scans of all films reviewed and is a welcome companion piece to the original Video Nasties book. |
![]() |
"See No Evil" by David Kerekes and David Slater takes a look at how the moral backlash over the video boom of the 80's got started in the UK, as well as reviewing all 74 video nasties in depth and looking at some of the outrageous articles that have appeared in the press over the years blaming films for anti-social behaviour. A must for those interested in the nasties phenomenon, or video controversy. |

Tom Dewe Mathews "Censored" is the grand-daddy of all books dealing with the UK's obsession of film censorship, demonstrating, through anecdotes and examples, its absurdities, dangers and occasional virtues. From the early peepshows, through the films that broke the mould in more recent times, up to the video and satellite anomalies of today, Mathews presents an account of a particularly British form of control. |
