DEAD AND BURIED.

Dead and BuriedUnderrated horror film directed by Gary Sherman (Death Line), starring James Farentino, Melody Anderson and Jack Albertson. Set in the small seaside town called Potters Buff, the local mortician (Albertson) has discovered a way to bring back the dead, who then go about killing other people who pass through the town.

The local sheriff (Farentino) is baffled by these bizarre murders, even more so when the victims return as zombies themselves. Scripted by Ronald Shusett and Dan O'Bannon, who also wrote Alien, this is actually quite a good horror film, with special effects by Stan Winston. Look out for Robert Englund in a minor role.

Other Information.
Initially re-released after 30s of cuts onto The Video Collection label in the late 80's, the film was later passed uncut and re-issued by "4-Front/Polygram" in the early 90's. An uncut special edition DVD was released in the UK and US in 2004.

DEATH TRAP.
AKA: Eaten Alive, Horror Hotel Massacre, Horror Hotel, Brutes and Savages, Legend of the Bayou, Murder on the Bayou, Starlight Slaughter.
Death TrapLow budget horror film by director Tobe Hooper of Texas Chainsaw Massacre fame. Apparently based on a true story, the plot revolves around a redneck motel owner who likes feeding his patrons to his pet alligator in the swamp outside.

Maralyn Burns, who also appeared in Texas Chainsaw, gets tied up and terrorised all over again and Robert England also puts in a brief appearance near the films beginning. Had previously been shown at the London film festival, but still earned a place on the "Nasties" list.

Other Information.
Initially re-released after 25 seconds of cuts onto the Vipco label in the early 90's. Re-issued uncut in 2001 after finally being passed by the BBFC. There's also an uncut special edition US DVD available under the title "Eaten Alive".

DEEP RIVER SAVAGES.
AKA: Man from Deep River, Mondo Cannibale, Au pays de L'exorcisme, Il paese del sesso selvaggio, Sacrifice.
Deep River SavagesThis was the film that started off all these sicko Italian cannibal flicks back in the 70's and 80's. Directed by Umberto Lenzi, who was also responsible for Cannibal Ferox (another entry on the list), Ivan Rassimov plays a photographer who's out on location somewhere in the Philippines.

After killing a guy in a bar brawl he flee's into the Jungle. But of course it isn't too long before he is captured by a native cannibal tribe who at first, string him up and torture him, then surprisingly initiate him into the tribe, rather like what happened in "A Man called Horse". The film also stars former TV presenter Me Me Lay who plays the Chief's daughter.

Like all of Lenzi's cannibal flicks there's plenty of vile genuine animal butchery, including the top of a monkey's head being chopped off and its brains eaten. Lenzi re-used several scenes from this film for his other cannibal film "Eaten Alive" , which surprisingly escaped inclusion from the list. Me Me Lai and Ivan Rassimov also starred together in that film, and again in Deadato's "Cannibal", which also surprisingly escaped inclusion.

Other Information.
The film had previously been rejected for a cinema release in 1975 under the name "Man from Deep River", the video was surprisingly removed from the DPP's list and not prosecuted. The full uncut version was submitted in 2003 and passed with only the animal cruelty scenes removed. An uncut DVD is available in Holland by video classics, an uncut US DVD by Shriek Show is also available.

DELIRIUM.
AKA: Psycho Puppet.

DeleriumAn underground society of former Vietnam veterans go around executing criminals that escape justice. One of them flips out and proceeds to start bumping off young women.

The friend of one of the victims helps the police track down the killer, and everybody ends up getting blasted in the shoot out that ensues during the films finale.

I was surprised to hear the theme from the quiz show "Mastermind" being used for the end title music.

Other Information.
Re-released after 16s of cuts under the title "Psycho Puppet" on the Viz label (currently OOP). The film appears to be currently languishing in obscurity, with no known releases available anywhere. The film should NOT to be confused with the 1972 film "Delirium" currently available from Anchor Bay in the US.

THE DEVIL HUNTER.
AKA: Il Cacciatore Du Uomini, Jungfrau unter Kanninbalen, The Man Hunter, Mandigo Man Hunter.
The Devil HunterA model gets kidnapped by a gang of thugs whilst working in South America, who take her into the jungle and demand a huge ransom. She is guarded by some ridiculous looking native who calls himself "The Devil" and has to go through all manner of unpleasantries until the gang get their ransom.

Enter Al Cliver from Zombie Flesh Eaters, who goes into the jungle in true Indiana Jones style to try and rescue her, which he does (eventually). Directed by Jess Franco, who's typically shoddy direction and editing do nothing help the awful, incoherent plot.

Other Information.
Still currently unavailable in the UK (thankfully). An uncut special edition is out in the US from Severin entertainment. A German DVD entitled "Jungfrau unter Kannibalen" is also available, which is uncut but German language only.

DON'T GO INTO THE HOUSE.
AKA: The Burning.

Don't Go into the HouseOriginally the title for this film was to have been "The Burning" until another film beat them to it. Actor Dan Gimbaldi plays a young chap who, having been abused by his mother as a child, finally returns the favour by burning her in his fireproof basement.

He then goes on to pick up some tarty looking women and disposes of them in the same manner.

Other Information.
Re-released after 3:07s of cuts onto the "Apex" label in the mid 80's (currently OOP). An uncut special edition DVD is out in the US

DON'T GO INTO THE WOODS....ALONE.
AKA: Don't go into the Woods.

Don't Go into the Woods AloneA group of teenagers backpacking through the Utah woodlands get attacked by a psychotic wildman, who is eventually hunted down by the extremely obese (in other words, fat git) Sheriff, and dealt some extremely vengeful treatment by the 2 survivors.

I'm not certain whether the humour was intentional or not, but the scenes showing the killer hacking up the overweight tourists as they huff up the hillside, along with the nerdy birdwatchers and teenage backpackers are hilarious. Particularly the guy who gets decapitated in the wheelchair, which was an absolute scream.

Other Information.
Removed from the DPP list and not prosecuted, the film was finally released uncut on UK DVD in 200. Also available uncut on German and US DVD.

DON'T GO NEAR THE PARK.
AKA: Nightstalker, Curse of the Living Dead, Sanctuary for Evil.

Don' t Go Near the Park2 kids, sentenced to eternal life as vampires, go around disembowelling people and eating their stomachs in order to survive. More crappy special effects, bad acting and inept direction are the order of the day here.

Made (barely) watchable, only by the appearance of horror "scream queen" Linnea Quigley, who plays the mother of a supernatural kid who has the power to make rapists explode (EH?). As per the usual, she ends up getting her kit off.

Other Information.
Removed from the DPP list but has never been re-released. The "Zone Horror" channel, which broadcasts on UK satellite, has screened a slightly cut version, which missed out a close-up shot of someone's entrails being pulled out, which appears to be the same print as the supposedly uncut US DVD, which included the missing footage as an extra due to print damage.

DON'T LOOK IN THE BASEMENT.
Don't Look in the BasementThe lunatics take over the asylum after the chief doctor is beheaded by one of the inmates. The lady impersonating the director implements new methods of treatment involving acts of sadism on the fellow inmates, which only inspires them to start killing each other.

Directed by S.F.Brownrigg, this isn't quite "One flew over the Cuckoo's nest" but proved to be extremely popular at American drive-ins when released back in 1973.

THE DRILLER KILLER.
The Driller KillerThis early offering by the now mainstream director Abel Ferra (Bad Lieutenant) was one of the main films responsible for kicking off the "Video Nasties" furore by the media, after the distributors -Vipco- started taking out full page colour ad's in various video magazines, showing the graphic video box cover.

Ferra actually plays the part of the lead character (under the pseudonym Jimmie Laine), who goes around clearing the streets of homeless low life's by means of a cordless power drill, although these scenes only make up a fraction of the films running time. M

ore of an "arty" sort of movie than a horror picture. Watchable, though relatively boring and unremarkable, the distributors where successfully prosecuted for obscenity prior to the VRA. The film was uncut in terms of gore, but had been trimmed of a couple of minutes to fit onto a 90 minute tape.

Other Information.
Eventually re-released in 1999 on the "Visual Entertainment" label, minus 54 seconds of cuts from the more graphic footage, though the missing footage from the pre-vra video had been re-instated, the new box art was also heavily toned down. Vipco had previously re-issued the uncut version in Denmark. The full uncut version was eventually passed in the UK in 2002 on the "ILC" label. Other uncut releases can be found in Holland on the "Cult Epics" label, an uncut US DVD is also available.

THE EVIL DEAD.
AKA: The Book of the Dead.
The Evil DeadThough better known these days for directing those Spiderman films, director Sam Riami's first cinematic venture was tis cult shocker about a group of teens holed up in a woodland cabin, trying to fend off the evil spirits unleashed by an ancient book. Each one becomes possessed and has to be killed in turn by the sole survivor Bruce Campbell.

Although the film held an 18 certificate for it's cinema release and the fact that the video was of the edited cinema version, it was still subject to numerous police seizures when it appeared on the DPP's Video Nasties list. The film spawned 2 sequels "Evil Dead 2" and the hilarious "Army of Darkness" which were also directed by Riami and starred Campbell.

Other Information.
Dropped from the DPP list, the versions later re-issued on video by "Palace" and "4-Front/Polygram" still suffered a further 1M:06s of cuts by the BBFC, in addition to the scenes already cut from the cinema release. Anchor Bay managed to get the full uncut version passed for a UK release in 2001.

EVILSPEAK.
EvilspeakClint Howard of "Gentle Ben" fame (and the brother of Ron Howard) stars as a poor sod at a Military Academy whose always being picked on by the other cadets because of his obsession with computers. He finally gets his revenge when he discovers a book on black magic, which after copying it onto his hard drive, allows him to do all sorts of weird stuff including summoning up a pack of man eating pigs.

Dog lovers won't like the scene where his puppy is murdered by some of the sadistic cadets, but the scene where a severed head is being used as the ball in a game of soccer is an absolute howler.

Other Information.
Re-released after 3:34s of BBFC cuts onto the "Horror Classics" label. This same cut version was re-issued in 1999 by "Prism". EXPOSE.
AKA: Trauma, The House on Straw Hill.
ExposeA novelist (Udo Kier) hires a quiet British country house so that he can work on finishing his latest novel. His agent arranges for a secretary to stay with him, in order to speed up its completion (played by Linda Hayden). However, this turns out to be a big mistake when she reveals that she has actually come to kill him for stealing the manuscript for his last novel from her husband, which drove him to suicide.

The housekeeper, Kiers girlfriend (played by 70's sex superstar Fiona Richmond) and 2 local thugs all meet horrific ends as Hayden goes on her killing spree. This film probably got noticed for its rape scene where Hayden apparently seems to enjoy the act halfway through, much like the rape scene in Straw Dogs. Look out for Brush Strokes star Karl Howman as one of the village thugs.

Other Information.
Re-released after 51s of cuts by the BBFC, in addition to the scenes already cut for its cinema release. This same cut version has been re-released by "Blue Dolphin" and "Odyssey" video. This cut version has also been shown on Bravo TV and the UK "Zone Horror" Channel. Barrel Entertainment have announced a forthcoming US DVD.

FACES OF DEATH.
Faces of DeathThis 1979 US video was actually made for the Japanese market and is supposed to be a documentary on the study of death. In actuality, the film is a vastly faked exploitation pic, narrated by the aptly named Dr Gross (in reality, actor Micheal Carr).

There are several genuine scene's set in a slaughterhouse (Bleeeuurrrghhh!!!) and some stock footage of accidents and airline disasters but the rest of the film, including the scenes of animal attacks, are in fact staged and in some places quite badly, although this doesn't stop you from cringing in disgust at some of them.

This video had actually been cut by the UK distributors "Atlantis Video" by about 35 minutes, but that didn't stop it from being included on the DPP's hit list. The US distributors also filmed a further 3 "Faces of Death" films, as well as a "Worst of" special and a documentary entitled "Faces of Death : Fact or Fiction". A German distribution company also released a "Faces of Death parts 5 & 6", which were exclusive to mainland Europe.

A cut version, which removed a dog fight and partially trimmed the "monkey brain bashing" scene was eventually passed in 2003. Available uncut on US DVD.

FIGHT FOR YOUR LIFE.
AKA: I Hate Your Guts, Bloodbath at 1313 Fury drive, Held Hostage, Staying Alive, Getting Even.

Fight for Your LifeA mean trashy exploitation pic about 3 convicts who escape from jail and hole up at the house of a black minister. There's a few nasty scene's where the ministers family are being repeatedly terrorised by the thugs and forced to listen to their constant racist diatribes, although most prints of this movie tend to miss out some of the nastier moments.

In the end the minister turns the tables on the 3 convicts and gives them their just desserts. The film was actually marketed in some US city areas as a story promoting black empowerment, though it seemed like little more than a rather violent episode of "Love thy Neighbour".

Other Information.
Still currently unavailable on video in the UK, was also rejected for a cinema release in 1981. Available uncut on US DVD by "Blue Underground".

FRANKENSTEIN, ANDY WARHOL'S.
AKA: Flesh for Frankenstein, Andy Warhol's Young Frankenstein, Frankenstein, The Frankenstein Experiment, Chair pour Frankenstein, Carne per Frankenstein, Il mostro e in tavola Barone Frankenstein, The Devil and Dr. Frankenstein, Up Frankenstein.
Andy Warhol's FrankensteinDirected by Paul Morrisey and the unaccredited Antonio Margheriti (who also directed Cannibal Apocalypse), this movie was originally filmed in 3-D and produced by Andy Warhol. Horror B-movie actor Udo Kier, who also starred in Expose, plays the part of Dr Frankenstein who in this version of the tale is married to his own sister and has necrophiliac tendencies.

Bizarrely entertaining, this bloody, tongue-in-cheek gore fest has the doctor building a couple of monsters who he hopes will breed and create a master race. A half descent film, with excessive gore and outrageous performances by the cast, the film was shot back to back with Warhol's even gorier Blood for Dracula which surprisingly, didn't make the list. Mary Shelly must be turning in her grave
.

Other Information.

FOREST OF FEAR.
AKA: Bloodeaters, Blood Butchers, Toxic Zombies.
Forest of FearA group of hippy degenerates have been growing marijuana plants in a Pittsburgh forest, when the FBI have the whole area sprayed with an experimental herbicide. Enter John Amplas (who George Romero fans may remember from the film Martin) as an FBI agent intent on busting the dope dealing "flower power" followers, only to find that the herbicide has turned the once peaceful hippies into flesh eating zombies.

Gore galore follows, as passers by are hacked up by the undead stoners who've gone out on a flesh hunt. The UK version was apparently lacking the epilogue seen in the original, in which one of the FBI agents quits his job after the ordeal then drives off to see his children.

Other Information.
The film has never been resubmitted for classification and so is unavailable in the UK. An uncut video was released in Holland on the "Video for Pleasure" label, and in the US and Japan under the title "Toxic Zombies" but both are currently OOP. An uncut US DVD is available on bootleg label "Jeff Films" which can be bought from Amazon.com

FROZEN SCREAM.

Frozen ScreamMore zombie mayhem as 2 university teachers start secretly conducting cryogenic experiments on their students with grim results. The operation to hold them in suspended animation works, but (literally) turns them into the cold blooded undead.

Very little gore, apart from a syringe being very falsely stabbed into someone's eye. Some of the soundtrack was also used in the film "Don't go in the Woods" which also made the nasties list.

Other Information.
Removed from the DPP's list, but never re-issued. Available uncut on German DVD by Astro/Laser Paradise on a double bill with Paul Naschy's "Vengeance of the Zombies".

THE FUNHOUSE.
AKA: The Funhouse : Carnival of Terror.
FunhouseDirected by Tobe Hooper of Texas Chainsaw Massacre fame, the story centres around a group of teenagers who decide to break into a carnival fun house and spend the night there for a bit of fun. They find very few laughs however, as they spend the film being chased around by a knife wielding freak from the carnival.

The film probably ended up on the list by mistake, as it may have been confused with "The Last House on Dead End Street" which was also known as "Funhouse", although that film never found it's way onto the list.
