Video Nasties
The List.
|
Here they are... all 74 films that appeared on the Department of Public Prosecutions hit-list reviewed for your enjoyment. Most of the reviews are of a general nature as I haven't had the pleasure of viewing all of them yet, but I've tried to include as much information as possible regarding the plot synopsis, current availability and any alternate titles that apply. |
A-C
ABSURD. |
|
| AKA: Antrpophagus 2, Grim Reaper 2, Rossa Sangue, The Monster Hunter, Horrible, Ausgeburt der Holle, Terror sin Limite, Zombie 6 : Monster Hunter. | |
Directed by Joe
D'Amato, (under the pseudonym Peter Newton) who's
probably better known for his soft porn films like the
"11 days & 11 Nights" trilogy,
this was filmed as a follow up to his earlier
"Anthropophagus the Beast" (another entry on
the nasties list). Italian B-movie actor George Eastman, a regular in
D'Amato films, stars in
the leading role, this time playing a mental patient
who's on the run from his former doctor.
Having torn open
his guts on a spiked fence, he's admitted to a local
hospital where he quickly recovers, then goes on the
rampage. Heads get stuffed in oven's, hypodermic needles are shoved in eyes and there are various power tool
murders (including the use of a band saw) before he's
eventually halted by getting an axe in the head. For me,
the most disturbing part of this film was perhaps the
police sergeant's uncanny resemblance to Robin Williams.
Lookout for Europorn starlet Annie Belle who has a role
in the film. |
|
| Other Information. The BBFC passed the film for a cinema release back in 1983 with 2m:32s of cuts, but has not seen the light of day since. Astro films of Germany released 2 different DVD's under the titles "Absurd" and "Anthropophagus 2", but these were German language only and were both cut by varying degrees. |
|
| Video Clips. Theatrical trailer (1.26MB). |
|
| ANTROPOPHAGOUS THE BEAST. | |
| AKA: Antropophagous Beast, Antropophagous, Antropophagus, The Grim Reaper, The Man Eater, The Man Beast, Maneater-Der Menschfresser, Gomia : Terror en el Mar Egeo, The Savage Island, Anthrapofogo. | |
The people in the group get
devoured one-by-one, and there's one particularly nasty scene where he
stomps on the belly of a pregnant woman and eats her foetus, but he
finally gets his come-uppance by getting a pickaxe through his stomach
and dies snacking on his own intestines. |
|
| Other Information. A heavily censored "R" rated version with a different soundtrack was released on US DVD under the title "Grim Reaper", which was also released in the UK. The full uncut version is currently available on US DVD under the title "Anthropophagus The Grim Reaper" and on Dutch DVD as "Anthropophagus". |

| AXE. | |
| AKA: Calafornia Axe Massacre, California Axe Murders, The Axe Murders, Lisa Lisa, The Virgin Slaughter. | |
After being raped by 2 of the gangster's she
retaliates using an axe and razorblades. Not overly gory,
the killings are more implied than shown, it is
interesting to note that another film by the same
director entitled "Date with the Kidnapper"
failed to make the list, although distinctly similar in
style and content. |
|
| Other Information. This film featured on the list only briefly, as it was quickly removed when the authorities found it already had been passed for a cinema release with an "X" certificate. Re-released after cuts with an 18 certificate in 1999 on the "Exploited" label, under the title Califonia AXE Massacre. The film was later passed uncut in 2006 by ILC. An uncut US DVD by "Something Weird Video" is also available. |

| THE BEAST IN HEAT. | |
| AKA: Horrifying Experiments in the last days of the SS, La Bestia in Calhore, SS Hell Camp, Holocaliste Nazi, SS Experiment Camp 2. | |
The "beast" of the title is a half man/half beast dwarf creature, which she has created in a bizarre genetic experiment to torture the female POW's in her care, by giving them to the vertically challenged beast who subsequently "bonks" them to death (and only actually appears in 2 scenes). The rest of the film focuses on
the various nasty things the Nazi's do to the locals and the attempts of
the female SS officer to torture the resistance members. She eventually
gets the tables turned on her when the allies attack and the resistance
give her to her own creature. |
|
| Other Information. Currently banned in the UK and unlikely to ever see an uncut release over here. An uncut US DVD is available under the title "SS Hell Camp". |

| THE BEYOND. | |
| AKA: The Seven Doors of Death, L'aldila, E tu vivrai nel terrore - L'aldilà, Die Giesterstadt der Zombies. | |
An Italian made
Zombie film by genre director Lucio Fulci, with a plot
"Borrowed" from Micheal Winners "The
Sentinel". Fulci regular Catherine MacColl inherits a Hotel
which unfortunately stands on one of the 7 entrances to
Hell.
Haunted happenings include hotel guests being eaten by flesh eating spiders, having their eyes gouged out by zombies, and attacked with acid, before she and her doctor friend, played by David Warbeck, finally end up trying to shoot their way out of a zombie filled hospital. This was one of three films directed by Lucio
Fulci that got included on the nasties list, the other
two being "House by the Cemetery" and
"Zombie Flesh-Eaters". Strangely
though, a fourth zombie film of his, "City of
the Living Dead", somehow escaped inclusion. |
|
| Other Information. The Banned pre-VRA video version was actually the edited "X" rated cinema version passed by the BBFC, which had suffered 9 cuts totalling 1:39s. This version was later re-released on video on the Vipco label with an 18 certificate without the need for further cuts. Vipco finally managed to get the full uncut version passed for a UK release in 2001. Also available uncut in Europe by EC Entertainment and in the US courtesy of Anchor Bay. SEE MAIN REVIEW. |

BLOOD BATH. |
|
| AKA: Bay of Blood, A Bay of Blood, Bloodbath : Bay of Blood, Bloodbath : Bay of Death, Reazione A Catena, Ecologia Del Delitto, Antefatto, Twitch of Death Nerve, Carnage, Before the Fact-Ecology of a Crime, The Ecology of a Crime, Carnage, Last House on the Left Part II, The New House on the Left. | |
Described as a perverse reworking of "La Ronde", the film plays as a bizarre black comedy,
with people getting axes in the face and being repeatedly
stabbed. Slasher film fans may notice that several killings bear uncanny
resemblances to some of the deaths in the earlier Friday the 13th films. |
|
| Other Information. Initially refused a cinema certificate, the pre-VRA video release was uncut. Re-released after 7 cuts totalling 43 seconds by the BBFC on the "Redemption Video" label in 1994 as "A Bay of Blood". Most European DVD releases of this are uncut. Also available uncut in the US by Image Entertainment DVD under the title "Twitch of Death Nerve". |

| BLOOD FEAST. | |
One of the earliest
gore movies ever to be produced was this tacky little
1963 film by the notorious Herschell Gordon Lewis. An
insane Egyptian caterer goes around hacking limbs, brains
and tongues off female victims in order to build himself
the perfect female body in which to resurrect the god of
Ishtar (nothing to do with the Dustin Hoffman film).
He hopes to do this during a
banquet he is preparing for a client, who is unaware of what ingredients
he is using for his dishes. But he meets an untimely demise by taking a
nosedive into the back of a rubbish truck. Why anyone would think this
badly acted film, with its awful dialogue, inappropriate music and
unconvincing gore (OK I suppose it was made in 1963) was offensive or
obscene is quite beyond me. Former Playboy model Connie Mason stars in
one of the leading roles (but obviously wasn't hired for her acting
abilities). |
|
| Other Information. Passed for a UK release in 2001 after 23 seconds of BBFC cuts to remove a whipping scene. The film was later passed fully uncut when resubmitted in 2005. Also available uncut on US DVD. |

| BLOOD RITES. | |
| AKA: The Ghastly One's. | |
Directed by the late Andy Milligan (no relation to Spike), the film is exceptionally amateurish, featuring extremely bad acting, poor dialogue and amazingly bad production which includes the directors instructions being audible on the soundtrack and the camera revealing crew members during the fight scenes. The films only notable inclusion is
actor Richard Romanus, who went on to star in Martin
Scorsese's "Mean Streets". |
|
| Other Information. Still currently banned in the UK. Available uncut under the title "The Ghastly Ones" on a special double-edition US DVD, with "Seeds of Sin", from "Something Weird Video". |
|

| BLOODY MOON. | |
| AKA: Die sage Des Todes, Colegialis Violadas, Pro Fonde Tenebre. | |
The pupils of a foreign language school on the Costa del Sol get bumped off in a series of bizarre killings carried out by a murderer in a Mickey Mouse mask, and no it isn't Walt Disney. This truly awful movie, directed by the appalling
Jess Franco, probably got included on the governments Nasties list
because of its lurid mix of sex and Violence. This version was uncut,
but the distributors also released a cut version. |
|
| Other Information. Re-released in the early 90's by the "Vipco" label after 1:20s of BBFC cuts, although they also released the uncut version in Denmark. The current UK DVD is of this same cut version. An uncut Dutch DVD is available on the Italian Shock label. |

| THE BOGEY MAN. | |
| AKA: The Boogeyman. | |
Directed by Ulli Lommel who also did "Tenderness of the wolves". Look out for John Carradine who has a small role as a Doctor. |
|
| Other Information. The initial re-issue in the early 90's suffered 44s by the BBFC. Vipco finally managed to get the uncut print passed and re-issued in 2001. Available uncut in the US on a double bill DVD with "The Devonsville Terror" |

| THE BURNING. | |
| AKA: Burning Revenge | |
This had been edited to achieve an
"X" certificate for a cinema release but due to a clerical error, the
distributors Thorn-EMI issued the original uncut version by mistake.
This was quickly withdrawn and replaced with the original cinema version
but poor old Thorn-EMI where still prosecuted for it. |
|
| Other Information. 10s where cut for its cinema release. It was re-released on video in the early 90's by the Vipco label after a further 9s of BBFC cuts although they did release the full uncut version on video in Denmark. The 2001 UK re-issue was of the same heavily cut version, but they FINALLY released the uncut print in 2002. Dragon Entertainment of Germany released an uncut DVD, and a special edition version is available in the US by MGM. SEE MAIN REVIEW |

| CANNIBAL APOCALYPSE. | |
| AKA: The Cannibals are in the Streets, Cannibals in the Street, Cannibals in the City, Cannibal Apocalipsis, Apocalypse Domani, Apocalipse Cannibal, Apocalipsis Caníbal, Cannibal Massacre, Hunter of the Apocalypse, Savage Apocalypse, The Slaughterers, Savage Slaughterers, Invasion of the Flesh Hunters, Virus. | |
Unlike
most other cannibal films, this one is set in the US city of
Atlanta. Returning home from the Vietnam war,
some former POW's played by Horror/Sci-fi veteran John
Saxon, Video Nasty regular John Morghen and Blaxploitation actor Tony King, have developed a craving for
human flesh.
The former Vietnam vet's meet up with some of their old colleagues and go on the rampage looking for victims to munch on. The police retaliate chasing them into the sewers and blasting them with shotguns and flamethrowers. Unfortunately it turns out that cannibalism is actually a disease spread by biting, so the unfortunate victims who survived the ordeal end up joining ranks with their erstwhile attackers. Directed by
Antonio Marghareti, with cosmetic effects by Giannetto De
Rossi who also worked on Zombie Flesh Eaters, this is one
of the better, gorier video nasties. |
|
| Other Information. Re-issued in the UK in 2005, though this was cut by 1s to remove a scene during the 'sewer shootout' of rats getting splattered with burning napalm as the BBFC felt this was in breach of the "Cruelty to Animals" act. An uncut US DVD by Image entertainment is currently available, but beware of a heavily censored US "R" rated video entitled "Invasion of the Flesh Hunters" SEE MAIN REVIEW. |

| CANNIBAL FEROX. | |
| AKA: Make Them Die Slowly, Let Them Die Slowly, Woman From Deep River, Die Rache der Kannibalen, Canibal Feroz. | |
Arguably the nastiest of all the video nasties was
this offering by Italian director Umberto Lenzi, which is
apparently in the Guinness book of Records for being banned
in 31 countries.
In this, 3 New York university students are venturing into the Columbian jungle when they cross paths with a couple of drug dealers, one of which being the illustrious John Morghen (the second film on the list in which he appears), who have been running amok with the local cannibal tribe. Not splitting any hairs about who
is and isn't involved with Mr Morghen, all parties
concerned find themselves being served up on the natives
next menu. Of course the (not so) special effects are all
to obvious but then so are the sickening acts of repeated
GENUINE animal mutilations. |
|
| Other Information. The BBFC unofficially approved a heavily cut 18 version prior to the VRA, but this didn't become an official post VRA certificate as the distributors where still prosecuted for it, along with the uncut version. This heavily censored version was eventually passed in 2000, with an additional 6 second cut, on the "Vipco" label. The films available uncut on most European DVDs, there is also an uncut special edition US DVD by Grindhouse SEE MAIN REVIEW. |

| CANNIBAL HOLOCAUST. | |
| AKA: Cannibal Massaker, Holocausto Cannibal, Nackt und Zerfleischt. | |
One of
the better cannibal flicks by rival genre director
Ruggero Deadato, in which a search and rescue team (lead by porn star Robert Kerman)
head into the Columbian jungle in search of a missing film crew, only to
find their remains and their stock of film that
they had shot about the last remaining cannibal tribes.
Upon viewing the found footage they find that the film crew had brought about their own demise by pissing off the local tribes who subsequently ganged up on them and murdered the crew in the most brutal of fashions. The film has suffered several outrageous claims about being a snuff movie (which it isn't) although, as is the case with most cannibal capers, features gratuitous GENUINE animal butchery. The distributors where successfully
prosecuted for obscenity, even though they had cut out
seven minutes of the more graphic footage. Deadato's
other cannibal movie "Cannibal" (aka
"Last Cannibal Wold", "Ultimo
Mondo Cannibal", "Jungle Holocaust")
surprisingly escaped inclusion from the list. |
|
| Other Information. The full uncut version was submitted to the BBFC in 2001 by "Vipco", which was eventually passed after suffering 5 minutes of cuts, which removed all the animal cruelty and heavily toned down the rape scenes. "EC Entertainment" released an uncut DVD across Europe, and a US DVD from "Grindhouse" is also available. SEE MAIN REVIEW. |

| THE CANNIBAL MAN. | |
| AKA: La Semana del Asesino, The Apartment on the 13th Floor, Week of the Killer. | |
A slaughterhouse worker kills a cab driver
in self defence, then decides to bump off his girlfriend
who witnessed it, then goes on to kill his brother, his
brothers wife, his father and a visiting prostitute. The
scene with the meat clever in the face is obviously a
plastic novelty and the gore is quite unconvincing.
Would
probably have never been included in the governments nasties list if it hadn't used the word
"Cannibal" in its title, which is probably why
it got noticed in the first place. |
|
| Other Information. Re-released in the early 90's onto the Redemption label after 3s of BBFC cuts (currently OOP). An uncut DVD is available in the US from "Blue Underground". |
|

| CANNIBAL TERROR. | |
Shot on the same
sets and filmed back-to-back with Jess Franco's White
Cannibal Queen, this dull French made effort by director
Allan Steve (AKA Julian Tabernero) is about a couple of small time
crooks who kidnap a young rich kid then hole up at a friends house in
the nearby jungle.
After one of them rapes their
friends wife they are then forced to high tail it deeper into the
jungle, after he tips off the authorities as to their whereabouts. They
are then captured by a local cannibal tribe, sporting extremely dodgy
hairstyles (and also appear to be wearing watches and wedding rings),
who adopt the young girl as their own but turn the 2 gangsters into
their next meal. |
|
| Other Information. The film was removed from the DPP list and not prosecuted. Was finally released uncut on UK DVD in 2003. |

|
| CONTAMINATION. | |
| AKA: Contaminazione, Alien 2, Alien Contamination, Contamination: Alien on Earth, Astaron Srut des Schreckens, Toxic Spawn. | |
An "El-Cheapo" rip off of
Alien (Ridley Scott and James Cameron must shudder at the
thought of this movie actually being titled Alien 2 in
some territories) by Argentinean director Lewis Coates
(Luigi Cozzi).
A Bug eyed alien blob, holed up in a Columbian coffee factory, is sending down alien eggs from Mars (actually painted balloons) which explode and shower bystanders with a sticky liquid that causes your stomach to swell up and explode in slow motion (animal guts everywhere). Enter Ian McCulloch of Zombie Flesh Eaters
fame who, with the help of Loise Marlea, brings the alien
menace to a halt. |
|
| Other Information. An edited version of this movie was unofficially approved by the BBFC and released prior to the VRA. However this unofficial certificate had no legal standing once the VRA came into effect, and so the cut version was still effectively outlawed. The film was re-issued uncut on US DVD in 2003 and was released uncut on UK DVD in 2004 SEE MAIN REVIEW. |
