I bought this as a companion piece to Peter Bracke's rather good book, Crystal Lake Memories, which is another publication catering to fans of the Friday the 13th saga. It's a bit unfair to compare these 2, as they're quite different in style and analysis, but its kind of difficult not to as they both discuss the same subject and were published around the same time. This book by David Grove looks more at the technical aspects behind each film, chronicling how director Sean Cunningham got started in the movies and the events that led up to the film, and its prospective sequels. It doesn't go into too much detail about all the stuff behind the scenes, instead focusing on how the films came across on screen, their appeal to fans, and battles with the various censors in each country.. Making Friday the 13th is a paperback edition and is published by Fab Press, who gave us the excellent "Shock Horror" and "Last House on the Left - Making of a Cult Classic" books, so if you've read those you know what you're in for. The are over 200 pages of information, featuring interviews with the likes of Sean Cunningham and most of the cast and crew from the films and is illustrated throughout with black & white and colour photos from both in front and behind the cameras. An interesting read, though is not quite as comprehensive as "Crystal Lake Memories", but never the less is a thoroughly worthwhile addition to any horror fans bookshelf. |
