TAKEN FROM
THE SEA
The stone,
they said, was taken from the sea,
Though black and thick as lead, found in the tide
Of a lost shore, where some say still abide
A transgalactic eldritch panoply,
Each is a stern and willful deity.
This stone rests on its one flat, glass-smooth side
Upon my desk far from that grim seaside,
Where it still calls to them, as it does me.
I see within its coruscated face
A nether realm that yet I still might reach,
Though what sane man would go to such a place?
What sorrow that it ever left that beach!
It calls from river valley and plateau,
And I will heed its call, and I will go!
