The Universal Frankenstein

"Frankenstein" is a pure horror movie. It's gothic and was truly considered horrific upon release. The Creature is basically a killing machine for most of the movie but attacks only those who have wronged him. Colin Clive is superbly cast as Henry Frankenstein. Boris Karloff......well.....he's the man!! The obviously painted sky backdrops for some reason add to the sense of macabre. As with most early talkies the music is nonexistent. I could do without the old Baron. Those wild machines Kenneth Strickfaden created are still as exciting today as they were in 1931. The scene near the end when the created and the creator are gazing through the windmill apparatus is genius. They are the same but different.....opposing poles if you must. The tall walls in the sets are a masterpiece. "Frankenstein" deservedly was included in the recent AFI top one hundred movies made list.
