The Universal Frankenstein
|
|
"Bride Of Frankenstein" is a peculiar hybrid of fantasy, horror, and black humor. Grossly over the top at times and blood chilling at others. Those fascinating gothic sets and walls return. The odd camera angles and moving camera along with Whale's patented medium and tight closeups were unprecedented for their time. Karloff is the best he ever was. His pantomime and speech are truly amazing as the Creature. My favorite supporting character of the whole series is there to keep you on your toes. Ernest Thesiger as Dr. Pretorious nearly steals the show from Karloff. He is a true tour de force as he becomes the focus of evil in the movie. Elsa Lanchester is stunning as a seven feet tall Nefertiti styled Bride. Both Henry and the Creature redeem themselves before the Creature reaches for the lever that puts an end to his misery. This time the music stands out. Franz Waxman did perhaps his best work devising it. It's my favorite monster movie music. Somehow, sadly, "Bride" didn't make it into the aforementioned top one hundred movies. It's a pity. It's truly one of the top ten movies ever made with so many performers and James Whale doing the best work of their career. |
