I read Night Terrors when it was first published as an e-novel. Although I've jumped on the technology bandwagon as much as I can, I hesitated when it came to electronic novels.
I believed that e-books couldn't possibly be as good as a "real" book. That e-books just had to be the domain of inferior writing that couldn't make it in traditional publishing. And that e-books could never take the place of the printed page.
After reading Night Terrors, however, I realized that my preconceptions regarding this new medium had been proven wrong.
The small town of McKeesport is suddenly plagued by gruesome suicides and violent behavior. The sheriff of this close-knit burg, Steve Wyckoff, is determined to find out who - or what - is causing these horrifying incidents before his entire town is destroyed.
The story's beginning, a surreal glimpse into a young man's nightmare, grabbed me with its creepy imagery and sinister atmosphere. The next scene started out innocently enough with a husband and wife sharing a happy, intimate moment on a Saturday morning. The ending of that scene, however, took me by complete surprise. From that moment on, I was hooked on Night Terrors. The author does not shy away when it comes to graphic descriptions. I found myself actually shuddering a few times as I read, something I rarely do.
Now Night Terrors is available in trade paperback format. So those of you who are still reluctant to embrace the e-novel format have absolutely no excuse not to read this book. And trust me - you want to read this book.
While I still believe that "real" books will never be entirely replaced by e-books, I no longer think this new medium consists of only second-rate writing. Night Terrors is proof of that. Drew Williams made a believer out of this skeptic.
