Following the success Universal Pictures had with their FRANKENSTEIN,
DRACULA and THE MUMMY movies, it was only a matter of time before the
studio decided to make a film about werewolves. Boris Karloff and Bela
Lugosi were the horror stars for Universal and both were considered to
star in the movie about a wolf man. But when the movie went into
production, Broadway actor Henry Hull ended up with the title role and
Warner Oland played the role originally planned for Bela Lugosi as Dr.
Yogami. Hull balked at wearing full werewolf makeup so Jack Pierce
created a more simplistic, quicker look for him. Several people worked
on the final script, including Aben Kandel, who would later co-write
the screenplay for I WAS A TEENAGE WEREWOLF. Today WEREWOLF OF LONDON
is considered a minor classic. Universal would create a more classic
werewolf film six years later with
THE WOLF MAN.
