THE TALE OF
THE SHADOW HUNTERS
Hello, My name is Michael Bruner, you can probably guess from my last name that my family is from Germany, that and my profession is 'schattenjager', that's German for 'monster hunter'.
Being a schattenjager is not a profession that I would have chosen, it's a family tradition. My family has been doing it for close to two centuries. When I am too old, or God forbid, too slow that one time against a monster, then my son Logan shall take over the family responsibilities, as I have taken over for my father when a werewolf bit off half of his hand. Don't believe me? Just ask to look at his hand and ask him how it happened; he'd be pleased to tell you, in excruciatingly gory detail. (It was his own fault in my opinion, I prefer silver bullets, a werewolf can't bite you at 20 paces, but my dad preferred the silver dagger to the heart, he likes to make it personal.)
There was once a time, when men lived in fear of the night. When creatures born of evil prowled the dark to prey on human flesh. These monsters hunted man. On October 31st, 1789 in Munich, Germany, a werewolf killed almost all of the Bruner family, all except a young boy named Manfred. Driven by revenge, Manfred Bruner became the first schattenjager. In the early days, when my family tracked down a monster, they killed them, never showing mercy. However, with modern times comes modern sensibilities, my father and I have come across creatures who were not truly evil, or others that could have been controlled with treatment. So we captured them, and we keep them here, in my basement. Every year, I let them out for a few days, to give them some fresh air and exercise. That's when I decided to start running a haunted house. My monsters get to roam free in a controlled environment; I get to educate the local populace of the creatures of the night. And, since it is done during Halloween, we do this all without raising suspicions of certain agents in the 'Federal Bureau of Investigations' (If you get my drift...)
Now, I'm sure most of you have watched 'Buffy: The Vampire Slayer' on television and thought that killing monsters is fun, glamorous and even easy. Well, you're wrong, dead wrong! Do you want to know what it's like?
Well, let me tell you: hunting monsters is freezing to death in a December snowstorm at 2 in the morning while waiting outside of a crypt, it's slogging around for hours in a cold wet marsh choking on swamp gas over some rumors of missing kids and a possible monster sighting, it's wading thru sewers running knee deep in blood wondering if this is the night where the monster will be a little faster than you and you'll never get to see your wife and child again, it's worrying about if you've got the right weapon for the right monster, because a wooden stake wont stop a werewolf and a silver dagger wont stop a vampire...
Being a schattenjager isn't glorious. It's a dirty, filthy, terrifying job that I wouldn't recommend to anyone. But don't be afraid, you should never be afraid, because the schattenjager's are keeping the world safe for mankind.
So, go inside, see my captured creatures of the night, and tell the world that monsters really do exist...
