Those not interested in building their own lamp dimmers will be glad to know that there are commercial alternatives.

Alternatives

The ability to dim any light is built into X-10. If you control lights and effects via DMX, you can use a "dimmer pack".

If you already use these technologies, taking advantage of their dimming ability is the easiest way to turn down the lights a little.

Check out your local home supply store's electrical department for external dimmer boxes.

Here are some I have found...

This unit, from Harbor Freight Tools (#43060), is sold as a motor speed control for a router. It will also function as a lamp dimmer, handling a load up to 15 Amps.

This lamp dimmer, from Home Depot, is intended to sit on the floor; you nudge the slider with your foot. This unit handles a load up to 500 Watts.
