All you need for a good atmosfear...
How about a table centerpiece? Arrange some candles, little gourds, some autumn foliage, a few snakes, spiders, & bugs- preferably FAKE ones. Then, take an apple or 2 (or a little gourd or 2), & carve them like pumpkins, & add a little votive candle.
Another idea I had was for a wreath for your door. Get a plain grapevine wreath & spray paint it black. Add a Halloween style bow, (black, purple, orange- you get the idea!) rubber or plastic creepy-crawlies, maybe even a small battery operated light set. (I have a wreath for EVERY holiday!)
If you use a wreath with foliage, regular spray paint may melt the plastic, so look at craft stores for spray paint designed for fake floral arrangements. I'm in the process of spray painting an old 3 foot Christmas tree black- ran out of paint- but it's looking good! Can't wait to finish it!
If you search around the thrift store or dollar stores, a candle ring makes a good small wreath. Perfect size if you decide to adorn every door in the house! You can use the fall seasonal ones & decorate, or if you're painting them anyway, it doesn't matter how gaudy or cheesy the flowers look. It's amazing what a little black paint will accomplish!
For those of you who still have skeletons left after that outside display that's embarassing the neighbors,Skinnka suggests putting one in your bathtub with a little water & red dye, with low lighting. Put some rubber spiders on the toilet tank, & hang some coiled rubber snakes over the towel rack.
JA616(Theresa) suggests tying fishing line from the toilet seat/lid to the shower curtain, (or how 'bout to the skeleton itself?)Ha-ha! She also suggested spraying non-stick cooking spray on your tub so your "blood" doesn't stain.
Splatter some old white handtowels with "blood" if you're the crafty sort, & hang them for your guests.
Have a willing victim sprawl on the floor. Use masking tape to make a body outline. You can do this in any part of the party area, but I think it works best in an out-of-the-way area such as the kitchen or a hallway. The body outline can be done outside too, with tape or chalk.
Fence borrowed from Martha Stewart's Holiday magazine...
Border your walls with a rickety black picket fence! Simply cut a point at the end of a length of black crepe-paper streamer. Make different lengths & tape them to the wall with scotch tape or removable double-sided tape. Tape one (or two) horizontal streamers connecting the slats. Instant spooky graveyard!
I had the thought to replace the pictures on my walls with spookier versions, but couldn't really find anything suitable. Well, Kim has some creepy pics to download & frame! Just go to Kim's Inexpensive Home Halloween Ideas. She's got lots of great indoor & outdoor decorating ideas!
Gather up some small & medium sized branches. Spray paint them black (or dark purple, or green & orange!) Put some sticking out from behind the couch, put some in a large vase, put some outside! Make larger ones into 'trees'. Get a large basket or bucket decorated to your liking, arrange your branch in some floral foam, weight it with some rocks, & spread some spanish moss (avaliable at any craft store) over the top. You can decorate your tree or leave it bare. (In my mind's eye, I see this same branch 'tree' painted white with silver or gold glitter as a nice winter decoration!)
If your computer's in view, seat a skeleton in the chair, mouse in hand. Man, I HATE waiting for downloads that take forever!!!
Might I also suggest, if you have any bedroom doors ajar, prop a skeleton up in bed with a pair of glasses & a book to read. Or, if you decide to be really gruesome, buy some old sheets from the Salvation Army, lay them out (OUTSIDE) & spatter them with any "blood" concoction of your choice, then drape them over some random "corpses" on the bed or floor. The possibilities are endless if you have rooms you won't be using during the party, that your guests will have to pass by, say, on their way to the bathroom.
If you find a "blood" that stays put & doesn't stain everyone else when dry, the bloody sheets can be used to cover (& protect!) your furniture. Just like in an abandoned house where a horrific butchering took place!! EEEK!
Gather up some plug-in or (preferably) electric 'candles' that are usually displayed in windows at Christmastime. (They're cheaper & easier to find around that time as well!) Paint them black, & drip some red paint- 'melted wax' along the top. Be careful not to get paint in the bulb socket. And stock up on flicker bulbs! Craft stores usually have them en masse & cheapest!
