Is It Home

The old wagon creaked and swayed as it slowly made its way over the rough roads, winding along at its own pace. The old peddler sat up front muttering to himself and making the ride as smooth as possible for the one in the back. He glanced over his shoulder repeatedly, but no matter how closely he watched, the Lady never stirred or moved at all. Damn the luck! He had just rounded a steep curve in the long winding road through Claymore forest when he saw a lady stumble out of the woods and collapse on the ground. Pulling his wagon to a halt, he had just started to climb down out of the wagon when a large white wolf stepped out of the woods.

The old man froze in his tracks.

The wolf slowly looked him up and down and then as if he had been appraising his worth, the wolf chuffed softly and backed away from the fallen woman to stand quietly in the edge of the woods. Cautiously the old man walked around the wagon keeping a wary gaze on the wolf as he step by careful step made his way to the woman laying so still on the grass. He thought she might be dead, but then he saw the slight rise and fall of her chest as she took in one slow breath at a time. He picked her up and placed her in the back of the loaded down wagon. What a lovely woman she was! He had actually met her once. Never forgot a face, he always said. Now what do you think was the lovely Lady Dawson doing in the middle of the eerie claymore woods? No matter, he’d soon have her back where she belonged—probably nothing more than a lover’s quarrel and no doubt Lord Dawson would be anxious ….and grateful….to see the lady returned. He shook his head lost in his own thoughts about lady’s and loves as he kept a close eye on the ever still form of the Lady Dawson, and turned his wagon in the direction of Dawson Manor.

Quietly walking, and also keeping a very watchful eye on the sleeping lady, the wolf kept perfect pace with the wagon and the muttering old man……..
